Don, Waymo is mostly for entertainment in the East Valley you cannot get in one and say take me to Phoenix Sky Harbor  from Mesa, their routes are very limited and not very long,In Gilbert it runs restaurant row they call it. Waymo has no service  except the East Valley they don't have anything in Scottsdale and Phoenix in the north valley and nothing in the west or south valley.I woudn't call it a cab company, they been involved in a few accidents and were shut down for a couple of weeks, you won't see a Waymo except in a very low traffic area.I rode a Waymo to the parking lot at Sky Harbor from the terminal
Cliff - Understand it is a restricted and controlled rollout but on public roads. There are plenty running around in confined settings like business parks. The point I keep trying to get across is autopilot is in actual use, period. It is early stage and will grow in capability and get more experiences. To deny auto drive or large scale EV rollout is just not being sufficiently informed on where things are and heading. Waymo is just one of dozens charging hard on getting this proven and rolled out.

One good thing is Waymo doesn't expect a $20.00 tip ,my son didn't want to fight the traffic on a Friday at Sky Harbor and sent Waymo to pick me up it was a experience

I'm not saying it doesn't exist. I'm saying it isn't ready for prime time, large scale use and still has major problems that will prove difficult to resolve in an acceptable manner. Limited, restricted use in small vehicles where the liabilities are largely ignored or transferred, speeds are slow, and damages can be contained is a very long way from high speed cross country trucking with full size and weight commercial rigs. At least with trains they were restricted to tracks and even there I believe in most cases an engineer is still required on cross country runs. The tonnage is an issue that greatly amplifies the potential for destruction, mayhem, and  therefore liability.

On a more personal note, I don't want to be anywhere near one when it screws up.

 HYDROGEN NEWS ARTICLE
April 8, 2023 1 By JOHN MAX
• Retrofitting existing vehicles to run on H2 allows fleet owners to reduce emissions and maintain current assets, saving money and reducing waste.
• Researchers from the University of New South Wales have developed a system that converts up to 90% of diesel operations, with an efficiency boost of 26%.
• This system does not require high-purity hydrogen fuel, as it uses a stratification technique to form pockets of higher and lower H2 concentrations, reducing nitrous oxide emissions.

As good as it might sound to replace an entire fleet of diesel vehicles with hydrogen trucks in order to dramatically reduce a carbon footprint, most companies simply wouldn't be able to afford that kind of investment all at once. This is particularly true when they already have vehicles that are still running just fine.

Conversions allow existing vehicles to run mainly on H2 instead of polluting diesel fuel.

That said, just because a company isn't ready to replace its entire fleet, it doesn't mean that hydrogen trucks are out of the question.  Existing large fleets can continue to be used – not only saving money, but also reducing unnecessary waste – while drastically shrinking their greenhouse gas emissions by using conversions from diesel to H2.

In this way, companies can hold onto their existing assets and still decarbonize in order to join the fight against the climate crisis and keep compliant with newly adopted emissions regulations as they happen.

Researchers have been developing several types of retrofit systems for converting diesel to hydrogen trucks.

For instance, researchers from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) have prototyped and tested a retrofit system capable of converting diesel engines to run on 90 percent H2. This greatly reduces both the carbon dioxide and the nitrous oxide emissions from the vehicle's operations while simultaneously providing a 26 percent efficiency boost.hydrogen news ebook

This conversion does mean that the vehicle will need to continue to use diesel fuel for 10 percent of its operation. Therefore, it isn't a fully green conversion.  Still, what it provides is a way for businesses to slash the majority of their greenhouse gas emissions without trashing assets that can still remain useful for a long time. In this sense, the reduced waste offsets a considerable amount of the remaining emissions from the vehicle's operations.

No Fuel Cells Needed
This system, like most retrofits converting diesel to hydrogen trucks and cars, does not involve the use of fuel cells, but is instead adds H2 injection directly into the cylinder. It also adds independent injection timing control for both the H2 and diesel systems. In the case of the system developed by the UNSW team, it also doesn't require the hydrogen fuel to be high purity due to a stratification technique that forms pockets of higher and lower concentrations of H2. In this way, the nitrous oxide emissions are substantially reduced when compared to the operation of a diesel vehicle.

Don didn't the city pay for those trucks ? Pepsi in Phoenix was trying to get Phoenix to buy them 10,not enough Californians in Phoenix yet to swing the deal

Hi Clifford,
Looks like there were several pockets that got tapped to cover costs. Sacramento is an excellent location due to Tesla in Fremont, Giga in Nevada, and new facility in Lathrop (Sac. suburb)

https://www.freightwaves.com/news/tesla-delivers-fleet-of-semi-trucks-to-pepsi-facility-in-california

PepsiCo's initial purchase of Tesla Semi trucks (estimated at about $250,000 per vehicle) was largely paid for by state and federal grants.
"The Sacramento Metropolitan Air Quality Management District paid for 18 of the 21 trucks to be used at the South Sacramento bottling plant with $4.5 million in grants," said Alberto Ayala, the district's executive director, according to The Sacramento Bee.
PepsiCo received a total of $15 million in state and local grants for the vehicles and charging infrastructure in both Sacramento and Modesto, as well as another $40,000 per vehicle from the federal government.

@ $250,000.00 a pop they are not going to compete with a decked out KW for a $150,000.00 that will run a million miles, going to be interesting to compare dollars to maintain the EV truck to the Diesel rigs

Trucking's Electric Vs. Hydrogen Battle Starts to Percolate
Both Offer Pros and Cons in Race to Decarbonize, but Ultimately, Lowest Cost May Prevail
news: Get TTNews in your inbox.]

Purely battery-powered trucks have a head start on hydrogen fuel cells in the race to decarbonize trucks, but because of major drawbacks for both technologies, the competition is far from settled.

While hydrogen trucks offer long driving range and quick refueling, only a few very expensive models are on the market. Battery-electric rigs are relatively cheaper and more widely available, but operating them at scale will require massive investments in high-powered charging infrastructure.

Juicing up 1,100 trucks at the same time for 45 minutes would use the capacity of an entire nuclear power plant, according to Martin Lundstedt, the CEO of Swedish manufacturer Volvo.
But don't count out fuel cell trucks just yet.
Their drivetrains convert hydrogen into
electricity that then powers the motor,
emitting only water vapor. A fuel cell
powertrain weighs less, allowing the vehicles
to drive longer distances with greater loads
and shorter refueling stops
While Volvo has six battery-electric trucks on offer and sold more than 4.,300 of these vehicles since 2019, it's also pursuing fuel cells. The company last year started testing
hydrogen trucks with 621 miles of range that
can be refueled in 15 minutes. Daimler Truck
has done similar trials the last few years
'I'm confident that we'll see the technology
mature over this decade,' Lundstedt said.
"Many different players are beginning ta
realize that electrification and hydrogen are
just two sides of the same coin."

There is no long milage testing reports on the EV trucks I can find I,found 1 that said 530 mile trip grossing 81,000 lbs .Both will have a place the EV for local and hydrogen for cross country.I doubt you will ever see a EV truck running double drivers for next day delivery.I noticed that most of EV trucks sold to Pepsi are for Frito /Lay those won't be carrying weight for sure  you can pull a 53 ft trailer loaded with potatoes chips with a VW

A little drift here but I was under the impression if you owned a Tesla charging was free at the super chagers,I found out in Needles that only 2 models are free you pay for charging the later new models and like fuel in Needles it is not cheap

So now they are going to use VW's to pull potato chip wagons. Cool

When I was doing some work for Frito/Lay in Jonesboro AR a driver told me a load of chips were only 6300 lbs in 53 ft trailer,The trailers are heavier than the average because of the rolling floor for unloading
