6v92TA Thermostat Seal Tool?

I just did this job. I cut a 2x4 to fit. I then tapped the seal into place. Not to high tec. but it worked.

You guys do it with a 2x4 or a socket here I went and paid over a 100 bucks for the Kent/Moore tool lol but it works on Cummins or Cat also so all is not lost LOL

I was going to use the old thermostat to tap it in or maybe a pipe or socket but my skills with tools suck.  I think with the 2x4 I have less chance of tapping it in at an angle or (knowing myself) would somehow manage to dent one side of the seal if I used anything metal to tap it in.

not trying to be a smart butt...but when those seal bores were new they were a whole lot shinier....clean um up and put um in !! 

Don,  I am sure they were much shinier.  If I could bead blast them I would but cleaning by hand is no fun.  I've sanded out the bore but I don't think I am going to do more than that...although I could say that I polished em up to a blinding shine but forgot to take pics before I put em back on....

Thanks guys....the combined knowledge is amazing but the comedy that comes along with it is priceless.

I wonder what size socket people use to install the rear main and wear seal I have installed the thermostat seals with just a hammer don't like too but sometimes you have no choice

Use the right tool, and probably wearing a set of these might help. No pince, no stink, no sweat! lol

Here is the tool that I used.  I don't think I'll be needing it for setting thermostat seals anytime soon so I'd be glad to sell it to you. 
I'll let it go for 1/2 the price of the last tool you bought and freeeee shipping!

I never got around to checking those thermostats, but that explains why it ran cool in the winter time.    I did replace the ones in the 8V92 this summer but that was during a radiator replacement. I replaced the seals the same way you did.

Clifford I have (somewhere) a Stemco tool I bought for a '68 Diamond Reo front axle seal that fit the last rear main I did. I never have any luck doing the wear seals. I try to talk some "expert" into doing them for me!  LOL!

To tell the truth, I hope I never have to do much of that kind of work again.

Tom - I just took the bus out for a run with the new Thermostats.  I ran her(him?)  for about 45 miles with the 180s and 100% water for cooling.  I checked the temp with a gun and compared it to the gauge.  The Gauge read 170 and the gun read 180 off the thermostat block.  So the gauge is off by about 10 degrees.  The old thermostats were 170s (I said 160's but they were 170's) and it seems if the gauge read 160 it might have been running right at 170. 

The bus runs better at 180.  Noticable difference.  Less smoke on acceleration.

Yeah - dropping the water today to fill back up with anti-freeze.  Just wanted to do a good flush this last day of fall before winter hits (supposed to freeze here tonight).  Hopefully no aliens today or I'm screwed.
