Has anybody ever switched back from synthetic to regular engine oil,my Cummins has Mobil Delvac ESP 5/40 now and the miles we drive I don't know if it is worth the price or not @ $38.00 a gal plus you are buying 5 quarts either

I run 5w40 synthetic in the cat . the 1st year I change out the filter and top up the oil  then on the 2nd year I change the oil and filter . most years I only put on about 6-8 k miles on it so not that many miles between changes and the oil is still golden at the time of the oil change

I wait until the synthetic is on sale and buy 3 x 5 gal. pails . this way it cost me less in the end if I were to change it every year with normal oil

I send in a oil sample on each filter change and it has come back as still good

I could never do this on the 6v92 as the oil was always black after a week of use

I cannot find the Mobil Delvac on sale and with my emissions I am sorta of afraid to change, then again over 600 bucks for a oil change doesn't make much sense

I looked up the B500 Allison and it was about a Van Hool but same tranny. It said Dextron III used to use and it all so said that you could use anything newer as in Dextron VI or synthetic but not 4 or 5. I changed from Dextron II to Dextron VI  (which is a synthetic) in Bus and Buick 2002 Century. It was only $19.00 on Amazon :D
It said you can always use a newer version but not an older one. BUT Note below,

Another MCI article said
Also note that effective January 2010, per Allison Service Tip 1099N, Allison no longer authorizes the use of DEXRON® III or IV in any of its transmissions.

Most busnuts have no need to change the auto tranny juice and filter but once, to zero the maintenance file on that. Very few of us do enough mileage in a decade to come close to any schedule.

Using synthetic engine oil, i'll be same as sledhead, mileage based. Short changing any oil is unneccesrily expensive. There's lots of stuff to spend money on a bus...

Happy coaching!

I am going to change all the fluids and be done with it,and guess I will bite the bullet and use all synthetic, the B500 has Trasynd ,the fan pump and motor has a CAT synthetic hyd oil and I am going back with the Delvac for the engine but will wait till we get back from New Orleans since it only has 12,000 miles on the oil and calls for a 25,000 mile oil change.I'll know more when my samples come back from CAT I can save around 800 to a 1000 doing it my self but hate to try a dispose of 40+ gals of oil and 25 gals of antifreeze ,lol I paid to much for this thing not to worry a little and would cry if something happen to my ISX 600 Cummins

Take a sample when you get back. Maybe it won't need changing yet and you can take your time and look for a sale.

Cliff,

I have switched from Mobil synthetic to Rotella 15/40 in a Series 60. It ran the syn for the first 150k of it's life, and I have put 75k on the engine running the Rotella. It does not use a quart in 10k miles.

I personally think syn is overkill in a high oil capacity diesel unless you are going to sample it and run for longer than the recommended change intervals.

I am leaning the same way Richard after speaking with Cummins ,the engine came from the factory with 15/40 Valvoline and 12,000 mile oil changes the manager told me not many of ISX owners use the 5/40 synthetic of any brand and they (Cummins) don't use it either
