Does anyone know of bus salvage yards in BC. I'm particularily looking for a starter for my GM PD4106.

Thanks
Fred.

Better to have yours rebuilt by a starter/alternator rebuilding shop.

If you can't find one I have 5 of them.

A point with anything for a 40 - 50 - 60 year old bus -- how can you trust anything that you find in a "salvage yard"?  Has it sat getting rusty for 13 years?   Was the fact that that part burned out one of the factors in the bus being parked for so long that it deteriorated to the point it had to be junked?  Was it "mothballed" to protect it?
If I'm going to depend on a component like a starter and I have to replace the one in my bus, it's going to have been inspected by a good shop and rebuilt with new bearings, brushes, rewound wiring, etc.
(Or maybe the OP was looking for a core ...?)

Gus's Auto Electric in Chilliwack.  They stock parts and actually fix things - not just an R & R shop.  Get the old one rebuilt or better still spring for a new 39MT

Its the last thing but its still on the list.

Sad but they don't make lefty 39MT or that would be the way to go

Carrying a known working spare would be a good strategy for a left turning starter.

You don't have to be able to install, you need the rare part for anyone el$e to in$tall for you.

I'm nowhere near BC, but I have more starter experience than I EVER wanted. :) I ended up with a brand new 40MT for 200.00. When I have the time (after everything is back together and the redesign is complete, I am going to re-build the old starter and keep it as a spare. I don't forsee the need anytime soon, but I'll NEVER find that price for a new unit again. And dad always said "have two or three of everything. You just never know".

If you plan to do the eventual R & R yourself then its a good idea to do it immediately and carry the removed working unit as a spare.  That way you know for 100% certain that A) you can do the R & R and B) you have the necessary tools to do the R & R.  It also confirms that the unit you think is a spare actually is a working spare.

As some of you may know I have had problems with my starter in that it starts fine when the engine is cold but once it warms up the starter will not turn the engine over. The symtom is similar to almost dead batteries. I have put in brand new batteries, new cables (that go directly from batteries to starter-no intermediate connections) and had the starter rebuilt. What I plan to do is try another working starter but Im not to crazy about spending 5-700 dollars on a new starter just to try. I really suspect the problem still has to do with the starter.
One of the members on here has one for sale quite reasonably so I will be doing that.

Fred:
What type of starter do you have? Our 2nd was a 4106 and from what I can remember, had a 40MT like the current MC8. I could be wrong, but memory is trying :) I just got a brand new unit for 200.00. I believe they messed up and had to honor the quote, but I'm happy to ask, if you should want a new unit.

Fred Mc's challenge is a starter that turns the other way, backwards for his left turning GM engine.

Long ago, this was a surprise to many people, even when GM's were plentiful and in fleet service.

Down right shocking to peeps now...

And harder to find a counter person that cares enough to try...

Yes Daddysgirl if you have one for the 4106 it is exactly the opposite of what your MC8 uses the 4106 has a backwards turning engine and the MC8 has a normal clockwise rotation engine!

39MT is the way to go in starters for most engines these days as they are smaller, lighter weight and more torque than the old 40MT & 42MT's!

Problem is they don't make a left turning 39MT and probably never will as the old lefty's are sadly slowly but surely drying up!

Thankfully, I never had to deal with a CCW starter...so thanks for the info. I just appreciate how he feels dealing with starter issues...ruling everything else out first, etc...you know.
And even though my 8 has a different unit, I will be grateful to have a spare once I get the old one rebuilt.

Just Curious ,but could a good rebuilder not reverse some winding's or something else internally they could do to reverse these starters??
