I happen to agree with you 100%, but, laws were not written by 'gentlemen of their word' they are written by lawyers and politicians, and there is the problem.

1000 bucks? When diesel was high a few years back it cost me that much to fill our tanks, can you afford to just walk away from it? If so do so.

Many times the reason for selling something is to make room.  I've sold some big stuff like a small car size before and I would be upset if it never got picked up after a couple of months.  Especially if my wife wanted it gone.  Oh god I would never hear the end of it if that was the case.  But clear communication between the two sides is important.  At some point it's unreasonable to still leave it there unless it was agreed upon.  Two sides to every story as previously stated though.  It's a bad situation from the view of both sides I'm sure.

I had reason to look into this once, there was property stored in my building when I bought it and I didn't know who owned it.  In law, generally, the idea is that ownership of abandoned property goes to the possessor of the property, who has a right to either own it or dispose of it.  "Abandoned" will vary in different jurisdictions, as will requirements for notice if the owner is known.  Even if the owner is known, if the property is abandoned under the definition of the jurisdiction ownership will revert to the possessor.  A car left on someone's property would probably fall into "abandonment" after some period of time.

I don't like to even comment on these things because we only get one side of the story. I have 2 questions.
1. You said, in part, "I bought a bay car from a person on this board last year. "
Q. Why did you not pick it up?
2. How long should you expect that they would hold it for you?

He already said...his wife was sick, money and distance were a hurdle.

The owner/seller gave it away.

Only a jerk would keep the money.

Correct me if I'm wrong but if any vehicle is left unattended long enough it becomes property of the property owner? ? ? I'm by no means taking any sides! I'm just trying to understand this better

Here in South Dakota it's 30 days to be considered abandoned. You can then start the title application process. Did you ever transfer title? If not your looking at a civil suit to get you money back from this individual.

While his situation is unfortunate, why bring it up on here? Sounds like it could have been dealt with one on one or perhaps a lawyer if push comes to shove. Probably a lack of communication on behalf of both concerned.

I agree it ain't worth an attorney.

Was there an agreement to dispose of the car...a time limit...

A fellow busnut...wouldn't do a thing like that.
A jerk would.

Let's see how many ignores I get for this post.

I'm not warning people not to do business with him. In the beginning, he was too busy to measure and weigh it for shipping. It was his busy season. No problem. When I couldn't find a reasonable price, he found me a good price for shipping ($425) My wife fell ill. Two months later, I phoned the shipper. Price went up to $775 (original quote was a mistake, apparently.) Frankly, nothing else mattered besides my wife's health for the next few months. I called this month to arrange shipping, was told it was given away. I'm not looking to crucify someone, I'm just looking for suggestions. I live in Canada and he is in the USA.

My suggestion is to forget about it.
