I'm wondering whether the problem is that its titled as a private bus.

Any of our vehicles that are older than 5 years, and that includes the bus, are not insured. It is not worth it. If it gets minor damage, we fix it out of pocket. It one got damaged beyond repair, we would take the loss, and do without it, or get another one. We do have liability on all of them off course, like 5 million. So about the bus, if I wrinkled some body panels, I would try to straighten them out. If not, I would look for replacements, (I know that could be hard to get). If I drove it off the road and totalled it, and survived, I would look for another bus, or truck conversion, or nothing at all, we would decide then. I just don't trust any insurance company to fairly compensate me for the loss of my bus. And you don't claim for small damage anyway, depending on the amount of the deductible, so I don't see any insurance company helping me in any way. They just like to collect premiums, they don't like to pay out claims.

     My father, who was pretty canny on things, said "if you can't afford to lose it, you can't afford to not insure it".  I don't think it's an easy call (esp. when a "person with no official documentation", having embibed a bit too much serrvessahh, decided that the easiest way to outrun the police was to do it about 115 Mph through the back seat of my car).  I guess you're gonna lose if you're gonna lose.

Well, I rang the agent. It seems the policy wasn't intended for vehicles as big as mine. Well, he would say that, wouldn't he? Perhaps its his way of saying he screwed up. Mind, I was suspicious of a $125 policy!

The whole thing is odd. Its a box on wheels. Who gives a rats @$# what its used for? The only risk is related to mileage.

That's pretty good advice as long as you take into account liability.  I don't mind self insuring assets but the public and environmental liability is a complete wild card.

I think the decision to insure is greatly influenced by the cost of premiums relative to the insured value.

I can't afford to not insure my coach because the premium is 1/2 percent of the coach's value. The problem we all face is eventually depreciation lowers the coach value so much, while the premiums remain fairly constant and a point is reached in which we only insure for liability to protect our assets and we risk the cost of collision damage repairs.
