About the same, just a bit bigger.  One common modification if you put more power in an MC-5 is to install MC-9 radiators.

Scott -  This drives me crazy!  Don't be afraid to go looking around in old junk yards and weld up a frame to make it fit.  As long as what you are putting in is bigger than what you took out.  I pray this doesn't set you all back another month.  That's not healthy for a herd of turtles.

Loving the brotherly love Sean. It's just life in a bus :-/  cliff, the guy quoting $1900 said the mci9 radiator has a ton of cooling per square inch. So he cautioned against getting anything with less cooling power, I concurred seeing that 6v92s don't take kindly to overheating. General radiator claims that he can use 1/2 tubing instead of 3/4 inch and get by. That scares me.

I bought my 2 radiator cores from general radiator & was skeptical initialy when they said their cores were much thinner , the guy i spoke to said his cores would cool a battleship so i ordered them , well after i receieved them & saw much less cores / tubes i called them & was again reassured they would be fine , I then procceded removing rads & recoring , watched the you tube video by mike 802 , great video helped me decide to recore myself , nothing terribly hard about it , they have so far been in about 6 months & have around 2000 miles on them , all miles have been with temps in the 90's with bus a/c running towing a 6000 pound excursion , i have kept a good eye on my temp gauge & it never rose out of the normal range . when we went out on our 1st trip / shake down after completing conversion I thought about where to go and decided to head up to niagara falls , about a 6 hour trip each way , thats when one of the original rads blew , i had pulled off the interstate to grab a coffee & wife ran in , I took a walk around the bus and holy c--- there was what looked like 100 gallons of antifreeze on the ground , had to hold in the emegency run button & limped across the street to a travel america truck stop , no worries i had just purchased the day before Coach net premier insurance , not so , turns out they would only pay to tow me to the closest repair facility the next day , i bypassed the leaking rad with some creative plumbing & headed back home , it was only about 60 deg out & did just fine on 1 rad

All radiators are designed per the engine manufactures heat rejection requirements in btu's taking in the consideration of the fans CFM,water pump volume and water circulation over the tubes different manufactures have their own method on how that is accomplished. I'm looking at the tubes and fins on your old radiator and I don't see anything special with it

Ok. Making me feel better. Here's the stats on my radiator:

Length: 24 3/4
Width: 18 1/2
Thick: 7 1/8
8 rows 3/4" tubes
10 fins per inch
Headers: 9.62"x19.625"
40 tubes per row
40x8x0.75=240 cooling units??

Boomer

There were two OEM MC-9 radiators, so beware.  The bigger of the two was installed with the 8V92 application.  I had both MCI part numbers, as we bought several of each, but unfortunately I sold most of my manuals a few months ago (3 cases worth!).

1992 mci 102c 6v92

Scott & Heather

Thanks gene. I just noticed you already mentioned that in your first post. I'm sleep deprived. Boomer, I must have gotten the larger radiator. My bus has a repower 6v92 turbo. I'll be making some calls tomorrow. I'm stranded 100 feet away from the sewer dump and our tank is over half full.

Update. Still a little confusion. Just spoke with MCI. They list two part numbers for the radiators on my 1984 MCI 9.

young 6r-1-28D
6k-1-5

1. The 6k-1-5 I thought was the MCI 102 big radiator. If so, that won't fit in my coach without modification correct?
2. Anyone know if the young 6r-1-28D is the smaller radiator for the 6v92 application?

Scott,
I got mine from Diesel radiator in Illinois, They were a 6G-1-9 8 rows, I have in my notes the 6R-1-28D is 6 rows, I did have to modify the back wall a little bit with a hammer. Jason

Scott & Heather

Ok. Sounds good. Diesel Radiator wants $1540 for one complete radiator. Tanks and all. I just found someone on Minneapolis Craigslist who is willing to send me two completely redone radiators for $1600 plus shipping. I think I'm going that route. His name is Max/Mark. I think he's known by some of you here? Has a bus...involved in the bus clubs...

Scott I really question the deal or transaction for $1600.00

What are you really buying, used radiators painted black?  Or used radiators that were taken apart and were repaired by soldering 20 cores/tubes.   Then put back together with new bolts/nuts and then painted black?

$800 a radiator can't get you new cores equal to the MCI radiators.
