Cliff and Alan,

Thanks for the input.  It will get looked at for sure.

Once I start looking at it I'm sure Ill have many more questions.  I need to get it fixed asap.  A couple hundred bucks now will save me thousands later :)

Cliff - thanks for the mention about the mitre box and coupling.  Those are things I never would have thought to check.  The initial noise and damage I may find could be an indicator to a larger problem.

Ill keep on this and let everyone know what I find out.  Details to come by end of month.

My guess is curse and ghost of lobsters past ;D ;D
A curmudgeon's reputation for malevolence is undeserved. They're neither warped nor evil at heart. They don't hate mankind, just mankind's absurdities. They're just as sensitive and soft-hearted as the next guy, but they hide their vulnerability beneath a crust of misanthropy.

I think I have a morse coupling that I'm not too proud of if you need it.

I understand that it does not happen at idle, but does it happen at no load high rpm or only when moving?
You don't have to believe everything you think.

Lin - only when moving.  Let off the throttle and it goes away.

I had an oil change this past week at Clarke Power in Wilmington, NC (used to be Covington Diesel) And chuck the mechanic took real good care of my bus.  He took the time to tighten up and check a lot of little things on the engine.  He couldn't figure out what was making the noise but suggested pressure/steam cleaning the engine to find any leaks and other problems that might be covered in grease.

Weird thing is that after he cleaned the engine the noise went away.  Interesting?  How do you troubleshoot that one?  I'm thinking he might have tightened something up that he didn't know was causing the problem.  Oh well.  Ill let y'all know if the mystery noise returns.

That reminds me of the first time I went to Davids Coach to get him to check my Turbo.

He asked me if I cared if he steam cleaned my engine that he would not work on it until he did.

He has the only garage that you can see your self in the reflection from the floor.

He also is a great detroit mechanic.

It think it may be too slow for a drive line noise like a bearing or gear.  How about it being a mechanical fuel pump return line/check valve?  With no fuel going through the injectors, the noise abates?  A big reach here.  Might also be cooling fan related?  Dunno fur sures.  HB of CJ (old coot)
