Wifey finally got her chance at driving the bus today with the van in tow (RJ - you would be proud) and while she was doing this -

I tried taking a snoozer in the bedroom and kept hearing this -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UCFG1HXtYUM

Its coming from the back drivers side on my Eagle 10.  Possibly the air dryer?  Although that's a weird noise for it.  It faded in and out and would stop completely if she let off the fuel.  Ill have to take a good look under there once I get finished working all these shows.

The winner gets an honorable mention on the herdofturtles website.

Have fun and play along with us!

Sounds like a noisy roller/ball bearing. Good luck, TomC

I think it is the coupling on the mitre box or bearings on the fan pillar block

Wish I could help, but we are new to this.

On another note, thanks for posting the video of your wife driving the bus. It gave my wife some inspiration of driving ours someday.

Sean,

Does it happen during idle?
Does the fan have play in it?
Do you hear a tick near the radiator when it is idling?

Since it stops when throttle is released, I might expect drive related.

I think you need to find out what it is before it gets expensive.

Unusual sounds cannot be ignored for long.

Tell us where you are and maybe someone can recommend help.

All great ideas, I would like to add the thought of what ever is running at a different speeds, comes into sync and out of sync, as when the generator is running at 1800 rpm and the fan in the a/c is runing at about 1740 rpm, if you listen they do the same sync dance, only most likely quieter. Another example would be a multi engine airplane / boat when all engines are in / out of sync.  Just a thought.

Hey, I've personally listened to this noise in the back of their bus while Sean was driving. Angie and I listened like crazy and I couldn't tell for the life of me what it was. Almost seemed like the wall resonating. It only happens when he reaches a certain speed and definitely doesn't happen when he's idling.

Sean -

I wonder if it might be the fan touching the shroud at certain speeds. . . doesn't sound like a bearing to me.

Perhaps the shaft the fan spins on might have developed a little more play than usual, and at just the right speed, it moves enough to cause the blades to just skim the shroud.  Strictly a WAG.

OTOH, glad to see Angie behind the wheel, and comfortable enough to be pulling the van, too.  Such a change from May of 2012!  :)

Never

Need to check but I'm pretty sure it doesn't.

Nothing noticeable but I've never listened for it.

Agreed -in Florida on the east coast until the end of this month.  I'd love to get someone in the bus while I am driving to listen to it.  I can't recreate the noise while parked.  If anyone is available toward the end of the month and wants a ride in the turtlemobile let me know!

It sounds like a metal comb with long tines being drug across the top of a tin can.  Real strange noise.  I have never heard it before.  My wife has told me about it and Scott has heard it and I just figured it was some mystery noise.  It comes and goes.

Pretty sure its not the miter box or anything down low.  Fan bearings are closer to where the sound is coming from.  You can only hear it when the throttle is being pressed.  Foot off the throttle and it dissapears.
I've never heard it at fast idle either.

It sounds like it is right under the floor in the furthest rear of the drivers side of the bus.  Like Scott says - it resonates right under the floor. Ill post when I figure it out but it might be the end of the month before I get a chance to get a good look at it.

Thanks for all your help!
You guys rock

RJ -  That might be spot on.  Ill check the fan tips and shroud for damage.

Angie says hello!  The turtlettes say hello as well.  Wondering if you'll make it to the deep south for new years eve.  Would be good to see you again.  Hopefully on the west coast come late winter/early spring.

Unfortunately I'm going to Kelowna, BC to see my daughter & the grandkids for Christmas, thru the 28th.  I tried playing with routing from BC to FL for the Arcadia rally, but the airlines all decided that they want too much of my allocated travel budget this year for that to happen.

Bummer.

OTOH, if the Turtlemobile makes it out to CA, I'll be glad to work with you to make the experience educationally fun for the troops.  Lots of things to see & do here, sometimes w/o having to spend a lot of $$, too!

Linda and I have a 10, not a 10s but we've had a noise like that. The reason it went undetected for a long time was because it was poo pooed by several trusted ghrus when we could make it happen.
As it turned out, one of the welds on the A frame that holds the fan assembly in front of the radiator failed. It was not discovered until the fan assembly cruised through the Rad. The rest of the story is long and and at times humerous. The bottom line? New rad, welder to rebuild structure, drivers A/C in and out, fluids and labor more than five grand.
I was very lucky to find Palm Peter Built in Ft Lauderdale who were great and went right work on the project with no BS about working on a "Junky Old Bus".  I also was able to source a new rad on my first call.
Look it over very carefully, you could save a bundle. We hope to be at Arcadia. You're welcome to look it over.

Yep he needs to find the source before it finds him there is a lot of bearings between the drive off the front Morse coupling on the engine to the fan on a Eagle it could be the alternator also

A close inspection of the coupling is where I would start the rubber bushings go bad in the coupling and it throws everything out of balance then it will cost you a mitre box

Jefferson is very proud of those coupling  ::) and he sells a lot of them
