Converting to Integral Power Steering

I have been thinking of changing to an integral system.  Nick at Nimco, which has a very reasonable price, says I will need a different pump.  Sam Caylor, who is more expensive in this, says my old pump will be fine.  I also noticed that Fred Hobbe's site suggests that the power assist pump will be okay.  How hard is this to do?  Should I expect to be able to do it myself, or is it beyond a parts changer's range.  Caylor also makes a bracket to use for the new box.  Is this needed or can I improvise on that?

Ditto. I also spoke with Sam Caylor about the same upgrade for my MC-7.
I will have my welder weld the plate in place; the rest doesn't seem too unreasonable for a semi-handy person.
I hope the existing pump will suffice!

Regards.

I don't know what type of system you are going to but the pump gpm and pressure have to match the steering box requirments. That should be easy enough to figure out by getting the numbers off of your current pump and calling the manufacture. I think the NIMCO takeout pumps are around $150.

I bought a take off from another AMGeneral and tried using it as is-Sheppard box.  Ended up rebuilding the box and buying a new pump since the old pump only put out around 1000psi, and 1800psi was needed.   You'll find out soon enough if it works.  Good Luck, TomC

I have a set of full size patterns for all the pieces required for the brackets at home in my shop. However, we are traveling and will not be home until mid November.  Email me if you need a copy of them.  Jack

Jack,
I will email you about those patterns.  They will certainly be useful.  Would the bracket be the same for my 5a as your 8?  I can do some of the work myself.  I have both cutting and welding equipment, it is just that I would not want to trust my life and others to my novice skills.  I'm sure I can find someone to do the welding.

Lin, and Jack:

I, too, would be interested in the patterns when available.

Best regards.

Why not post them here if they are in a meduim that will work on this board for file size and type, or if nothing else, send them to Jack, Nick, Richard or myself and we can resize them and put them in the Help board files.

Just a thought, since this question comes up a lot.

They are full size patterns on cardboard.  When we get home in November, I can trace them on kraft paper for those that want them. I may be able to make smaller drawings with dimensions.  Will try when we get home.  Jack
