On my 79 5C the pipe from the muffler to the manifold a large piece broke out. Yes broke, there is a hole and I have the piece that fits in it. I was going to weld it back in, but it is also part of the flange which is very thin.
I called MCi parts and after some discussion the man emailed me copies of the exhaust system parts pages to make sure I ordered the right part. The pipe was $118 plus $7 shipping. I'm impressed with MCI customer service.
I am taking out the old pipe with an angle grinder and  will try to install the new one without removing the muffler. Has anybody done this or woud it be eaiser to pull the muffler?  Jim

Don't know the actual answer to your question, BUT

A neat trick to weld exhaust pipes in fairly unaccessable areas, like around the backside when you can't get to it, is to weld as much as you can of the joint in the normal maner, then use a 2-3" holesaw, cut a hole in the front of the pipe, and weld the inaccessable area from the inside.  Then weld the holesaw cutout back in place and it's done!  Saved my LOTS of time on a few nasty exhaust jobs....

Chances are that muffler won't be moving due to being rusted in place.

I'd try really hard to get it to line up without disturbing any more than you have to....

These things just seem to keep breaking until you've replaced it all....

happy coaching!

Jim, we're both facing about the same problem and I've been putting mine off for over a year. I have the 90 degree elbow, and the fishtail, and now the muffler. I just need to order the fittings to install the whole shebang. BUT, my buddy in FL (and he knows who he is) is SO much more experienced than I in this, is probably waiting with baited breath for me to return and call upon him to 'help' me do the installation. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

My fervent hope is that he remains healthy and able. But then too....we have a mutual friend who LOVES exhaust systems. Unfortunately he's too far from you to be of much help.

If I can loan you my elbow, for replacement later, I'll be happy to do so.

Bob

PS. Be careful...MCI might be in receivership soon.

Everytime I get into one of these projects I think I should take it to "thier" ranch to do it.  Even though "they" are not home now.
I cut the old pipe out today and decided the Y from the manifold needed to come out also. Even with the manifold Y out the muffler will need to be looseened (is that a word?). Will probobly be eaiser to finish job with muffler removed.  Shoulda went to the ranch!!  This crawling around in the dirt at the "Executive Class A RV Resort and Spa" is a pain. However the staff is very accomodating, I put in a request to the concierge and they come up all kinds of things!
Bob when you get to FL if you need help with that muffler, let me know. I have somebody you can call!!!
Good tip on the whole cutting.

Jimbo,  one of the many things I admire about you, along with your choice of Josephine, is your ability to roll with the punches. Somehow there's no doubt in my mind that you'll solve and survive this little setback with flying colors. Ah, how I do admire your youth! ;)
