can find an OK shell for that kind of money.  finding a conversion that is not very home done and or super dated that wonlt need several thousand more will be the job.

Sorry, but $8000 wouldn't even be a good down payment on my 5A.... but then again i got a good one when i found this one. ;D
Used to own a 1968 MCI 5A and a 1977 5C.

Don't know it might be a good start on this one I have been working on.

I looked at one yesterday that was parked with the 4501 449 I am not sure what it was other than a GM but it has been emptied out of the seats and ready to start converting.

This is an ex-USN bus.

It needs a little work,(Don't they all?), but should be a good runner.

For more information you might contact HighTechRedneck.

I don't think you will have a problem finding a useable bus for around that. It will probably be a GM 4104 or 4106. Be patient, and learn how to search craigslist and all of the other bus for sale sites. Sometimes when I get a wild hair I post some of what I run across on the BNO site. If I run across something I will let you know.

Craigslist is not bad if you know how to search it. I'll skim it this weekend for you.

It is located in Chattanooga, TN (it's not mine, but it is stored here)

No plumbing yet.  But lots of bay space to set up tanks.

The body is straight and in good condition.

If you are patient you will find something nice for 8K.  Craigs is the place, you will need to use a site called http://crazedlist.org/ and this craigslist search engine only works on mozilla firefox which s a good free browser as it doesn't get infected with bugs like windows IE.  the search engine allows you to make huge searches of multiple locations, ebay etc...have very high prices as opposed to what's out there.  Last year when I was looking I found some very nice looking 4104s 4106s etc..between 5-8K. More than a few buses have been built (nicer than the one above, and more complete) by retired guys, tons of sweat equity for free as these usally are estate buses. I ended up buying very low as nothing in the 5-10K range is much of a  known quantity.  There are also older MCIs around that price, but everything I have read about the 50-60s MCI makes me feel more comfortable with the GMCs.  You could also try Kijiji.com it has deals too, but you will need to find a super searcher for it as well in order to make things go quickly.  BTW FWIT the 4104 seems to get the highest milage of any buses out there, underpowered but what's the rush.
