Onan generator problem

Hey guys,
I post earlier about a problem I was having with my 10kw generator shutting down after running for about 10 minutes or so. It shows the high temp. light. I checked the belt and it was loose so we tighten it up and closed up the box but still got the same problem. What would be the next best thing to check?

Phil,

Try checking your coolant sensor and associated wiring. I'm not certain how the Onans read temp if it's off the ground or off the B+.

Another thing to check is that there is no air in the cooling system... I had a water cooled Onan come in at a CG I use to work at with a cooling shutdown problem and it turned out that the cooling system was full but hadn't been "Burped"

Other than that, one of our resident experts will have to help.

Try this, check your coolant level!

We had a 100 Kw at work that kept getting an auxiliary fault (some sensor tripped it off)

All fluid levels and the coolant looked good.

When it would get up to temp and the thermostat would open, it would allow the coolant to be pulled down just low enough to cause the coolant level sensor to trip the fault.

Ended up leaving the cap off and filling almost to the top, when the thermostat opened filled up to normal.

Never happened again.

10 minutes sounds about right to get up to temp!

My OHNO will do crazy things like that if the generator start battery is low.

Phil,

You need to replace the belt...   Once it has stretched, it's shot and will continue to slip because the width is now too narrow to seat high on the pullys.

I know it's a big job to do so but, I have been through this two different times.

Thanks guys.....I guess I thought if we just tightened the belt that would be good enough, but it makes sense about being stretched....I will get a new one and change it, thanks Nick. If that doesn't take care of it, I'll try the next option.

You guys are great, now if you can just change the weather so I feel like trying it outside. I may have to wait till I can get it back into my mechanic's shop.
