I am converting my 1979 Crown and removing the factory a/c. Everything is out except the plenums (ducts) which are along the roof line over the windows. They are heavy gauge steel about 1/16 inches and I can't see how they are attached. It looks like they were welded on to the frame from the outside before the roof was put on. Does any one have any experience removing these

Hi Sweeney,

Welcome!

It sounds to me that you need a 4" grinder with some cut-off wheels to rip into a section and see just how they did it.

Good Luck

I cut a 6x6 hole in it and the only thing I see are screws from the other side of the sheet metal in the back. the rear of the plenum seems to be light weight like normal home a/c ducts. I can move the sheet metal on the back side, but cant get it completely out of the way.

Wow! How lucky were you to find a Crown 40ft recliner?  What engine/trans do you have, and do you have air suspension.
I was just telling my wife tonight, that I'd like to find a 40ft tandem drive Crown with a 400 Cummins, Allison automatic, and air suspension, then cut the whole bus off behind the drivers compartment and rebuild up to be a 40 x 102 with a garage in the back with the master bedroom overhead.  Look on line to www.NRCmod.com conversion to see the Freightliner cabover with the garage in the back.  Just picture that instead with the Crown front.  I know, crazy.  Good Luck, TomC

I always thought those ducts were way cool. Maybe you can leave them and use them for air vents, buses get really hot along the top in hot, sunny weather.
