How to submit photos into the MAK bb'd, in lengthy detail, dahhhh

On a previous post it was asked by one of our busnut buddies how to submit photos on the MAK bulletin board.  I have submitted a lengthy but I believe if followed to the letter way for anyone to do it and after doing it twice, they no longer need to get frustrated trying to do it.  The instructions look intense but follow them one at a time and if they fail, let me know and I will further investigate if I told you wrong but I just wanted to take the time to help out one of my buddies trying to do this.  I hope it helps out others, you may move this to the help desk if you wish after testing it out and be sure it does as I have instructed, to free up the board.

Instructions as I know of it to post photo's on MAK bb'd'

(1) Have your photo's you want, up to (4) of them located on your computer, write this location down!!

(2) Be sure your photo's are less in FILE SIZE than 128Kb, for 1 -4 pictures per post.  A good starting point is to make your photos (640 X 480) To start with and then keep checking how many KB your photo is by running your screen pointer over the photo and the size will automatically be revealed and again you cannot have over 128KB total of photos to be submitted.

(3) Even though the reduced photos are submitted and are smaller than the 128kb photo size allowed, they will open up to the original size you made them when the viewer wants to enlarge them after reading your post so that everything is large enough to see.  NOTE:  The MAK program will automatically make these photos into a smaller thumbnail so that there will be room in the post for text and not everyone really wants to have their computer get confused if they are on a phone modem.  The automatic re-sizing done by the MAK software makes everyone's photo's the same size of opening up the post without any difficulty. 

(4) Write the text for your post as you want it to be read and sign it as you normally do when just posting any text.  NOTE:  It is recommended that if you are making a large amount of text in your post that you write your text and make corrections in a Microsoft word program or Document -WordPad so that you will not accidentally lose your text which is very, very annoying and this will happen, I promise you!!  After your text is all done the way you want it, highlight it and (Copy) it and then go to your MAK program and start a new post like you normally would do, only instead of typing just use your right click on your mouse and select (Paste) in the MAK text box and your text you wrote is automatically put into the MAK posting after you click on the (Post) button as you normally do. 

(5) Now after you (Preview) your post text, you should also indicate in your text that you wrote that you are including photos so everyone will know in case there is a glitch and the photos do not show up in the MAK bb'd post.  Make any and all corrections for your text, grammar, spelling etc. the way you want it to be seen if you did not do this on your Microsoft word program already.


Here is a suggestion now after writing all your text that will make it easier not to make any mistakes and lose all your text like I am now writing and be able to also include your photos you want. 
(1)  Post your text on MAK BB'd. (Without) any photo's!!!!!

(2)  Read your post and again see if it says all you want it to.

(3)  If you are satisfied with all your text, go to the top of your post on the right side of post and click on the word (MODIFY).  What this means is you, as the submitter of this post have the right to go in and make adjustments of additions or subtractions of (YOUR POST ONLY).  You will be able to now add your photos and not lose any of your text thought and nothing is more upsetting than losing your text for a post with a few hundred words or in my case, maybe a few thousand!!  And I Have, Lots of Times until I learned.

(4)  When you have your text post page opened up you can make changes to it, go to the bottom left hand side of your post text box.  There should be the words (ADDITONAL OPTIONS).  Left click this.

(5) Click on these words and a box will open that says: (BROWSE) more attachments.

(6)  Click on the (BROWSE) lettering.  NOTE #1:  Now the importance of knowing where your photos are comes in effect.  If you wrote the file they are in and the number of the photo's you want to post you will have it simple from here out.  After clicking on the Browse button you will have to find the location where the file is that holds your photos.  NOTE #2: You can only submit ONE photo at a time and up to only 4 photos per post on the MAK software bb'd. is allowed!!!!!!

(7)  Select the first photo you found after locating it after clicking on the Browse button.  Once you select it and click word (OPEN) at the bottom of the photos selection page menu, the photo will automatically be put into the bottom of your text post in the window next to the word (BROWSE), but you cannot physically see it, remember, you cannot see this or any photo until you are all done and this has been submitted to MAK.

(  Lets say you want to submit the maximum of 4 photos for your post.  You just selected the fist one and on the bottom of the page next to the Browse button is text indicating the location of the Picture you just submitted, this is for the computer and MAK communication.

(9)  Now for picture #2, go to the bottom of your text post again that you are MODIFYING and next to the word BROWSE, Left click on the words (More Attachments).

(10) This will now open up another box under the one you just worked on with the word (BROWSE).  Do exactly as you just did above, you have to know the location per your notes where to  find your photo, select your photo after the location is found and click on the word (OPEN)  Now your 2nd selected photo location will show up in the Browse box under the first one you selected to post.  Now you are ready for the maximum number of photos allowed on MAK per post of (3). 

(11)  On the 2nd. Browse box, left click on the words (More Attachments).  This again will automatically open up another (Browse) box underneath the second one you just did.  Again select Browse, find your photo, highlight it and click on the word (OPEN).  Your third and last photos location will be posted in the 3rd. browse box under the previous two you selected.

(12)  You now have to go to the bottom of your text page, under the (BROWSE) selections and choose the word (SAVE).  You have to do this or you will lose your photos only and have to do it all over again.  This MAK software program will now automatically post your photos in your test post but NOTE you cannot see the photos at this time.  You will have to go into the MAK bulletin board as you normally do, find your post and open it up to see your thumbnail photos. 

(13) Click on each photo, one at a time and make them the full size as submitted, (640 X 480) pixels or what ever size you have resized your photo to so that it is not larger than 128kb.  But open one at a time and you can view all three after opening them at the same time on the same page. 

There is various ways you can do this, this is the simplest for me and if you copy and paste this or print it out and use it word for word you will get it in no time at all, The important thing is to remember to do your text first, get it done the way you want, submit it to MAK (WITHOUT) photos.  If you do not (SAVE) it first, you will lose it all, try to remember that!!  If you are doing a post modification as I suggest, you will only lose the photos and you can resubmit them as you originally did.  Try not to make a long post using just the MAK page to write your text on, you could end up getting very upset as I have way more than once.

I hope this helps some out, if you follow it word for word you should only have to use the directions about twice and then you have it.  As I said there is probably many other ways to do it but this works for me and simplicity is easiest for me to learn.

I have to correct you ....

It doesn't matter what viewing size the photos are..... 640X480, 1024X1276, 9000X6 kabilliuon.

that is just the viewable resolution of the picture and has absolutely nothing to do with posting a photograph.

What does matter is the FILE SIZE it must be less than 128Kb, for 1 -4 pictures per post.

What you need to do to find the file size of your photo is to open up the folder where you have stored the pictures, (files) and at the top, on the tool bar, click on "View". A drop down list will appear. Follow it down and click on "Details". The files in your folder will now show Name, Size, Type and Date modified. The size is what you are interested in. It needs to be 128Kb or less.
You can also hover your mouse cursor over each file and the detail properties will appear.

From there you can open your favorite editing program and using the help files if needed, resize the photos.

But REMEMBER..... ONEHUNDREDTWENTYEIGHT KILOBYTES IS THE MAXIMUM FILE SIZE FOR POSTING. NOT the file resolution (Pixels).

For what it's worth, there is a far easier way of inserting photos into posts - when typing your post simply click on the 'insert image' button, then add the URL of the photo in question between the tags

Using this method there is no need to re-size the photo as there does not seem to be any limit on the file size. Also this method has the advantage (a big advantage in my opinion) that everyone gets to see the photo, not just registered and logged-in users. The only disadvantage is that the photo in question has to have been already uploaded to webspace somewhere - but this is also very easily done. Incidentally, if you've come across a photo on the web that you want to use to illustrate a point in your post, an easy way to find the URL of that photo is to right-click your mouse over it and select 'Properties' - then just copy the URL to the clipboard and paste it into your post

I will leave the instructions on how to (re-size) photos to less than 128kb to you or who ever is confident on doing these instructions as I have to get packed and leave in 2 hrs. and my explanations are too lengthy and everyone falls asleep or gets bored reading them.  I request that instructions be made simple to understand and step by step, that is the only way I can learn and try to help others when I give examples of my success at anything I try to do.  Not everyone is computer savy, I know I am not and there is a lot of us out there above 50 years old that is trying to get the hang of this computer stuff down so we too can surf and feel confident our computers will not blow up.  Simplicity to me is best, always!!

The question in this particular post has already been asked how to (re-size) photos on their computer but there has not been any real specific simple instruction on how that I could understand. I cannot go to one website to do this and understand how to and then come back on my computer and do it etc. then the frustration word -issed comes into my mind.   

Thanks for your help on this and clarification of my mistakes in my original post, I hope it helps those that were intimidated trying to do this.  I was one of those guys for over a year or more.

As Jeremy says, the easy way to post photos is to sign up for free webhosting (or use the webhosting that comes with your internet service) and upload your photos. Then just paste the URL of the picture you want between the codes.

Example: (The periods after each 'img' have to be removed. They are just there so you can see the codes.)

Way too many steps in the first way, although it will work that way. From what I see, a lot of the bus nuts here don't care much for computers and would rather be working on their buses. The easiest way to post pictures will probably get more pictures posted for us to see.

Yes using the [img] argument in a post is one way to do it, however, some users don't have a webserver to upload to, or don't know how to do that either or have a slow dialup connection.

Have you ever tried to upload a photo in the size range of 3Mb to a webserver on a dial up connection? It's almost as entertaining as cleaning the stuck trout out of dump valve. Note I said, "Almost".

What one problem is is that the digital cameras nowdays come with multiple settings usually something like "email size" (640X480), 1m, 2m, 3m 6m, etc. Many of the cameras default to 3m (3 Mb file size) from the factory and the instructions are so complicated that it takes an 8 year old to set the camera up,(so Easy an 8 year old can do it!). Grownups have problems with simple tasks like those of selecting the settings on a camera.

Then, too, some people are not comfortable signing up for a "Free" photo webhosting service, because they have to give their email addresses or other information. They have been told that if they give out an email address spammers will attack them and take over their identity and lives. Which, unfortunately, is sometimes true.... look at the recent hacking of Monster.com where thousands of resumes with personal information have been compromised.

And another problem is photo editing software.. With Adobe Photoshop understanding all the bells and whistles can be frustrating. Using HP software that came with my printer is worthless, since there isn't a convenient resizing option. I've also used about 10 other programs on customer machines that were only good for playing with on that computer or printing photos.

Richard, (Driving Miss Lazy), advocates the use of Google's "Picasa" a free downloadable program available at:

I must admit, I have never used that particular software, but, then I'm spoiled with my outdated copy of Adobe Photoshop (V6.0). From what I've heard, it's pretty easy to use and helps walk a user through each process.

Maybe we can get different members to post what software they use and how they use it to resize their pictures, along with instructions on HOW to resize.

I had my photos down to 96kb and it wouldn't take them and deleted everything so I learned it's easier not to try to use it  at all

There was another photo post recently. I mentioned there the huge photos that people were talking about. No photo even close to a  meg should be used on a forum for the very reason you posted... some people are still on dial-up. I mentioned there that I make my photos around 600x400 and they are usually from 40-90kb each. I also mentioned that anything over 72dpi is usually worthless for internet use since that is about all most monitors will show anyway.

Of course, I am a graphic designer and use Photoshop too many hours a day.. But there are lots of simple, free, bulk photo reducers out there. I think one was even listed in the other thread.

Also, everyone who has an internet account has a small amount of web storage space included. Most people just don't know it and/or don't know how to use it. It's really all very simple once you learn how.

At the time I was on a dial up connection

I even got some photos in a zip file that were over 8mb each.
