What is the redline for an 8v71? At what RPM is the governor usually set at?

     I doubt that there is a single answer.   My bus manuals say to set the no load RPM limit to 2150 which is about 2100 loaded.  In military, marine and pumper service DD has specs at 2300.  I've heard of truckers running them to 2800.  For longevity it's probably best to keep them under 2100 but a healthy engine can certainly tolerate an occasional burst to 2300.  I use a compromise, my governor is set at 2250 no load.

I have mine set at 2400, and like the option of being able to rev that high.  2400 is NOT to high for the 71 series.  In fact, Detroit made marine 71 series engines that were rated at 2500, which means that the no load was around 2750, just to give you an idea.  2350-2400 is where I'd set the no load.  Good Luck, TomC
