4104 Speedometer Drive Gear Installation

I removed the gear and shaft to replace the oil seal and cable adapter from my four speed trans. Now it doesn't want to go back in straight, it goes in at an angle??

Any good ideas about how to make this easy?

Gus I wish I had a solution for you, but I don't! I just thought I'd bring this back up so maybe someone who has an idea will see it and answer you! FWIW BK ;D

Gus,
If you look at the tip of the adapter you'll notice it's built like a keyhole. It can only go in one way with the slot lining up with the tang.
Make sure you have the tang seated in the transmission before you try screwing the adapter back on.

This was probably as clear as mud, but I hope you get the idea.

Dallas,

I wasn't very clear, my problem is with the gear on the speedometer drive shaft and the gear on the trans output shaft. I can't get these gears to mesh so that the speedometer cable output shaft sits up straight (The keyhole end you mentioned).

When i removed the speedo shaft I had a bad feeling. This shaft is about 5" long and has the speedo drive gear about halfway up the shaft. The bottom of the shaft fits into a hole in the trans case bottom and the top of the shaft is held in place by a small bolt on fitting like the shaft bearing cover on a trans.

I guess it will just take some Chinese puzzle type of maneuvering to get them to mesh but so far I haven't solved the puzzle.

I also would like to get a right angle drive adapter to go into the trans so I can get rid of a foot of cable that just flops around in the way.

Gus: I don't have an answer to your problem but this might be a good time to change to an electronic speedometer driven off the front wheel. It eliminates the cable drive system and is easily re-programmed if you change tire revs/mile. They are available with odometer and trip odometer and pretty much trouble free.

I finally got the gear and shaft installed. I had to put the shaft into the top end bushing (Parts book calls it a sleeve) and work it around while moving the driveshaft slightly. It wasn't easy but it finally went into place, much to my relief. I sure didn't want to start removing trans parts to get to it. It was not easy to remove in the first place and I knew then that it was going to be a problem.

I've given a lot of thought to an elect speedo because mine jumps around so much, but I've learned to live with it. I still need a way to connect the square ended cable to the key female fitting in the end of the shaft. The old adapter fell apart when I removed it and I think this loose fit caused the spedo to jump around. The $260+ for the conversion and the amount of work involved installing the electric speedometer are not minor considerations.

If I can't find the adapter I'll have to cut the cable and crimp on another key fitting. I really don't want to do this but may have no choice. These key fittings are not easy to find. A parts store here dragged an old box of these thing out of his back room and talked like he is going to throw them away. I think I will offer to buy the whole box even though a lot of the parts won.'t fit a bus.

What I really would like is a right angle 1:1 adapter to completely eliminate the cable extension with the square end.

Gus, I may have the right angle drive for you.

It'll be a few weeks before I can look for it since we'll be on the road to Tennessee, and the tub the angle drive is packed in is, you guessed it... in the middle of a bay packed in like a sardine.

I'm not sure what drive end it has on it, whether it's the keyed type or the square drive.

Dallas,

Thanks for the offer. It is a female key on one end and male key on the other. I discovered they come in two sizes. Mine is the smaller size. The round part of the key shaft measures almost 11/64", 0.153" to be exact.

Some right angle drives are not 1:1 because they are used to adjust speedometers to gear ratio or tire size changes.

Dallas, the latest rumor going around is that you are going to stop here in WV (redneck/hillbilly) country for a few days on your way to BK's. Any truth in that rumor?

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body. But rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, a good Reisling in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming:  WOO HOO, what a ride

Gus,

Here is a photo of the angle drive I have.
I would have taken longer to find it, but Cat AKA: SWWNBD decided it was time to go through some tubs and consolidate.

Anyway, this angle drive has female keyways on both ends. It's possible the male end is just a seperate piece that fits between the transmission and the drive.

gus

Dallas,

Thanks, I can't really figure out what I'm looking at but it appears that the open end in the first photo is a regular speedo cable end that has a square hole and is screwed onto the drive. Can you screw this off with pliers and see what is between it and the drive?

The other end is not clear to me at all. It appears to be a nut with a hose clamp behind it?? This is probably the end that connects to the trans. The trans fitting is a male thread but the cable part is female slot.

What do you want for it, maybe I can make it work but I really can't tell from the photos?

Is it 1:1 ratio?

Gus,

One end is male thread one end is female thread. One end still has the speedometer cable end on it. Both ends are female keyhole shaped holes.

It has a grease fitting for lubrication and some kind of nut on the other end for taking apart to rebuild I suppose.

It is an A.C. part. Part#1565192 it is not 1:1 it is 1:0.500 ratio

I just looked it up on Google and it can be used for either tachometer or speedometer angle drive.

I'll try and get another photo of it tomorrow that is a little more clear

Price? If you want it, you pay for shipping and it's yours.

gus

Dallas,

Thanks.

I could probably work around the end fittings but since it is to be attached directly out of the trans I cannot work around the ratio. It is probably for use on an old truck with an aux trans.

I do appreciate your effort.
