I remember reading somewhere the replacement size belt for the generator on an MC8 or maybe it was a 7

Does anyone remember what size it was or is.

I did a search and could not find it

Any help would be appreciated.

My 75 MC8 parts manual shows: v-belt - Generator drive (consists of matched set of 4) as part number 8R-27-3.  My local partsman says that MCI part number crosses over to a Gates 7420.  If you have a 7, I'm not sure if they would be the same.

Everything I've been told is the generator belts for '7 and '8 are the same set-up.

It is important for the set of four to be matched.

In other words, cut off the same piece, exactly the same length.

MCI sells them in matched sets, for a price. If buying locally, line the belts up and try to get the writing to be continuous across them.

Consequences of a mismatched set is that they will break or throw off prematurely.

Back when I was selling Gates products we always looked for matching batch numbers which were imprinted on the belt near the part number.  I don't know if Gates is still doing this, but buswarrior is absolutely correct on the consequences of not having matching belts.

A lot of sellers of belts will tell you that their belts are so good that they all match. This is untrue since there is no such a thing as two identical rubber belts. Matches sets are just selected to be close enough not to cause a problem and they are shipped from the factory as a set.

If you are going to be running your alternator at high load (running run airs) get a proper matched set. One belt slightly shorter would be carrying the entire load and belt failure will occur, with the failed belt taking out the other belts.

Unrelated to the original request, but is it important for two belts to match exactly when driving the radiator fan too?  I had never heard of matching belts before, but I've also never had a vehicle before with more than one belt driving a single accessory.

I have two V belts driving my radiator fan and plan to get spares before my next trip of any distance.

Yes Brian any time there are two or more belts driving anything it is strongly reccommended to have matching sets! Same principle as drive tires! FWIW BK ;D
