IC now offers that new CUMMINS gasoline engine as an option. They have been talking about this engine for a few years now. It should be interesting. Not every school bus operator wants diesel and the extra expense and DEF hassle nor the unproven and sometimes dangerous all electric versions. Sounds ideal for a school that only uses the bus for special activities and field trips. A diesel wouldn't pay for itself very fast under those conditions.

That should be a good engine, the one I saw being tested look like the 6.7 diesel with spark plugs

Looks to be proper spark ignition. Kind of dissappointing. Gasoline compression ignition allows lower emissions (predominantly NOx) than diesel and therefore has no def and dpf, but still has the fuel economy advantages of compression ignition (20-30%).

Unfortunately 87 octane or even 85 octane is rather high for gasoline compression ignition (requires very high CR) and  GCi can suffer from backfires when cold if not executed properly. Mazda developed this concept and executed it well in the sky active D (not sold on the USA). It still needed spark plugs or "spark assist" to get around the challenges I already mentioned.

Due to the utter incompetence of the previous administration and the one before 2016- trying to steam roll everyone down the ridiculous EV path- even globally, no one's willing to invest in actually realistic plausible tech and even the Japanese have been forced to put alot of the above on a back burner.
