When Gary at BCM asked us to contribute an article to their website, we jumped at the chance to share our journey. As any van or bus builder knows, the hours spent customizing your rig create more than just a vehicle—they create a story worth telling.

We're Colin Gage and Marni DeRyckere from Merritt, British Columbia, and along with our two dogs, Bailey and Marley, we've spent the past few years building "The Kraken"—a rugged, off-grid 4WD bus designed for remote exploration. What started as a response to COVID-era travel restrictions became a passion project and a testament to DIY perseverance, community support, and a love for the road less traveled.
