Good evening bus folk!,

I have an MC DL345 in need of a shutterstat (for the radiator /fan) checkup.  The coach is a looong way away from me (Arizona) at Leisure Coach in Fontana, CA  having some interior changes made.  But on the way had it's shutterstat stop properly engaging so the fan has now stopped fully engaging.  I'm not sure whether the air line or filter got clogged or the recently installed shutterstat gave up the ghost.

Can't do anything at my location but would like to have a mechanic check it out/ fix it before it's on the road again as w/o the fan running at proper speeds the engine overheats. 

Any suggestions appreciated!  Thank you all,

I thought Los Alimitos closed 3 years ago when Marshal Deems sold his bus.

Maybe contact J&R Diesel in Riverside.  Dustin is an excellent mechanic, he rebuilt our Detroit 671.

He only works on buses in his shop. The shops phone number is 951/453-2668.

I'll second the J&R and Dusty recommendation. He's real close to you down the street off Riverside Dr./Main St. on Placentia as stated. He should have no trouble getting to the root problem with a shutterstat/engine cooling system issue. He may balk a little if it's not a Detroit 2-stroke which is what they specialize in. The Series 60 may give him pause, but we all know the engine cooling system components are pretty similar no matter what the powerplant happens to be. Plus he may need some help with locating all the various parts in the Coach.  Not a hit in any way on him since they are 2-stroke Gurus and do mostly Crowns and some Coaches with 2-strokes. If you go to the yard you'll see exactly what I mean. Certainly worth a try.

That system is not hard to figure out the DDEC reads the sensor then opens the air valve to the fan clutch when it reaches 210 degrees for high speed.  If the fan clutch is good it will default to the high speed when a problem accrues  if not you can lock it manually with a bolt on the clutch and it will run on high all the time.I think your D has shutters on the back not sure, they get worn and hang and will not open too,I am not a fan of the shutters on the D they are always a problem, You probably have a bad fan clutch just guessing ,then it could be a simple fix like the belt is slipping

Yes - you are correct Clifford!  We do have the shutters.  We have been fortunate in that we've had no issues w/ the fans.  And true to the 210 degrees - The fan hit high speed perfectly after the shutterstat was recently replaced.  It had always been a problem, so for about 3 months after the fix I was _really_ happy with it.   ;D

Can't lock this fan to high speed.  We did try, Kevin took a long look at it - but that key is jammed up against other "stuff".  Almost zero clearance.  Not nice.

Interesting re: belt slipping- it is a bit on the loose side.  Maybe also blocked air line?  There is a filter setup back there for the air lines.

Dustin at J&R Diesel Services in Riverside recently rebuilt my engine, and I can also vouch for him.   He works on Crowns and Gilligs with side-mounted radiators with Shutterstats, and he can deal with DDEC such as mine, so maybe he's the man for you.   While my bus was there he was also working on a mid-engine Crown with stuck shutters.   He is however very busy, but call him anyway to see if he can squeeze you in:  951-453-2667 or 951-781-7710.
