So for left hand threads does that mean you turn it left(counterclockwise) to loosen them?

It's the opposite.  For left handed threads clockwise loosens

Maybe that is why everything now is hub pilot to take the guess work out of lug nuts both sides are the same righty tightly and only 1 lug nut on the rear
