I hope someone has a source for spring loaded push button door/drawer latch. I have been to all of the big box stores around ,with no success ???
I saw this style of latch on the used on the drawers of a portable MRI trailer. With the button on the latch out (released) the door or drawer could be opened as normal ,with the button in( latched) the door was locked, this worked great for the techs. The other good thing about this latch is that it is only aprox. the size of quarter and looked good!!!
THE RUBBER BANDS or zip ties have got to go!!!!!! and

Dave:  Thanks. I have been looking for something similar to this, too.  The item you listed in your link is pretty slick .  For other folks, make sure you click on the tiny icon for viewing other images (it is easy to miss). One image shows the back/mechanism details.

I found it a bit odd that they list every dimension for the unit in inches, then state it requires a 26mm mounting hole. ??? ???
If you're going to be dumb, you gotta be tough.

Stan

All the world's manufacturers work in metric. They measure it with a ruler for US catalogs but critical mounting dimensions are always in metric. Cabinet supply stores have all the large metric bits for mounting latches and hinges.

Hi Dwayne, Here's how I did mine.  (Follow the link below) They are very simple to install and work great. Rockler does have them but they have limited colors (Brown and Brown)  I bought ours at Hafele America. That's a cabinet company supply house in Atlanta. You need an account to buy there, so see if you have a friend in the cabinet business that can order them. They have all kinds of colors, plus the latch comes in three sections so you can mix and match colors if you wanted to. They cost about $6 or $7 dollars a set.

As it happens I suspect you won't need to buy a metric drill bit in this case - 25.4mm = 1", so wiggle your 1" drill slightly and I expect the 26mm latch will go in the hole!

A shameless plug for my business - visit www.magazineexchange.co.uk for back issue magazines - thousands of titles covering cars, motorbikes, aircraft, railways, boats, modelling etc. You'll find lots of interest, although not much covering American buses sadly.

I used a 3/16" drill bit to make a pilot hole, then I used a 1" Forstner drill bit to create the hole for the latch to go thru. I drilled in about three quarters of the way on the front and finished the hole from the back. (To prevent splintering.) The latch fits perfectly.

Here's the link for the drill bit.

You can buy single drill bits at Lowes and Home Depot.

Hi dwayne,

Southco also makes a plastic push button latch for the marine industry thats a little cheaper.

I couldn't bring myself to use any of the RV type drawer hardware i found, but still insisted on tight security for all my drawers, especially the forward/rearward facing ones.
I looked and I searched, and finally came up with these... http://www.blum.com/usa/en/03/03/08/index.jsp;jsessionid=00007YGbhd00ShkWbI2e9X1Vmpe:-1
Nothing shows on the outside of the drawer, and they are fantasic to watch in action. You can slam the drawer as hard as you want, and it will run free until it gets a couple of inches from closed, then crawl slowly to a soft, secure closure. Mighty quiet too.
That also gives me the option of using any type of drawer pull I want.
Figure about $35 per drawer for the Blumotion hardware.
If you search the Blum pages,  also check out the lift systems.

Interesting.  I don't see anything on their site about how they open but from your post I presume that they resist opening intially.  How would you describe their behaviour while opening?

Another option is to use standard drawer slides, maybe even what you already have.  If the drawer part has a wheel in front, all you need do is notch the bottom of the rail it rolls on.  the notch is right in the front.  When the drawer is closed, it drops the drawer down a small amount.  Just enough that to open it all you  have to do is lift the drawer a little and pull as ususal.  easy, cheap, effective.  But they will not open while driving.  nothing to remember to do before getting under way, if they are closed, they are latched.

When pulling on one of my Blum equipped drawers, you will feel a bit of smooth resistance for the first inch or so, then it glides freely and smoothly.

You should also look at the various (and they have many) latches on the Allegis web site.  I used these slam latches on all the drawers and doors and am extremely pleased:
