And in spite of all else, Shell Oil reports record profits of $9.1 billion in 1st quarter.

But no, of course oil companies aren't price gouging at all...

Are you guys saying that the record profits for the quarter were NOT related to the higher oil prices?

The cost of production didn't shoot up since the start of the Russian invasion, just the market price for one of Shell Oil's prominent products, as well as the subsequent pump price for fuel. Sure, production costs increased but not nearly as steeply as the price they're able to sell their product for.

If you guys are contending that oil companies are not raking in huge profits as a result of the market price increase in oil you're not paying attention.

Good news for me is Diesel just went down to $4.96 a gallon! Going to top off for Fla trip tomorrow. The bad news for "Y'all" as they say around here is Blairsville Ga is not on the way to anything. We all hate the price hike but we need to go DTCERRATO and just hit the start button! Maybe shorter trips, but I am not parking it this summer. I am 65 this summer and not going to get younger waiting for things to get better.
I try to stay out of the political chat, but I do take notes on things. When the current gang took the reins, in my town, gas was $2.26 a gallon, the border was secure as it can get, we were exporting oil and natural gas, there was record job growth and employment in all sectors, races, and sexes.
But we must still be a great country. People are breaking into it every day....!

Shell oil profits are mostly from Asia and Africa it would surprise me if 1/2 of their profits was made in the USA,our problem are the idiots in Washington and the clown behind the desk

Right, they always charge what ever the market will bear but they have to. From the corporate view if you tried to do anything else they would kick you off the board.  But oil is a commodity like wheat and corn and those markets are regulated so we don't starve and farmers don't go out of business.  No reason why that cannot be done such a vital commodity as oil. Heck we already subsidize the heck out of it.  Here in Texas they are rehiring all the guys they laid off back when oil went negative and that will help. Of course they will be exporting a lot of it to make up for Russia.

If Ukraine manages to free its self from Putin it could replace that and more.
And repay the US for all the stuff we sent :)

You kind of argue against yourself here.

I agree that the oil market is a global one. I also agree that lots of their profits come from overseas.

Those both go against your argument that the folks in DC have so much to do with the prices we're paying at the pump.

We're paying those prices at the pump because it's a free market system, because this is a global market, and mainly because right now that global market has scared up oil prices to over $110 last I looked. All those have little to nothing to do with anyone in DC.

There's no way the corporations are price gouging, they're just charging whatever 'the market' will bear in a system where they've lobbied, bribed, and driven out competition wherever possible to ensure they could always turn the greatest profit possible with the least regulation and responsibilities regardless of the harm caused to society as a whole.  Obviously.

Oh, and also there can't be price gouging if there's inflation, a war, or a pandemic either as the concepts are mutually exclusive.

Interesting how different the prices are between parts of the US. I paid $5.20/gal today here in Wisconsin. There is a tax difference, but that would only account for about 1/3 the price difference here. No idea what's behind the rest of it.

We we're thinking the same thing but with the bus fully ready to roll for months now that's exactly what it's doing. 2200 miles into our 3rd AK trip from FL. At 71 who knows what's around the next bend so we chose to find that out by looking through the windshield - besides the shop walls were starting to close in on us.

5.20/gal is good compared to what we're seeing from FL to middle Canada so far. Tomorrow will be our 1st fill up in SK CA (Gulp!) Best price in the states was $4.88 with a TSD discount.
