ATF is fine, It is what I am using in mine

My HT755 has Mobil Delvac Synthetic ATF in it.

The 700 series will use about any oil as long as it is C rated the Military used 15/40 engine oil and it was spec you have a lot of choices ,synthetics is not always the best choice on older Allison's

When I started working on trucks in the wholesale grocery business in the 70's all our shag trucks with Allison's ran ATF over the years as we got new shag trucks they all ran 15-40 engine oil in the Allison's and when I left that industry in 2002 all had 15-40 engine oil in the Allison's.
