Our current toad is the 2009 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with the Quadra-Drive 2 six speed - 4X4 & the 5.7 Liter Hemi
We're going tomorrow to look at a 99 Jeep Cherokee Limited with AW4 & IL 4 Liter 4X4. If we buy it - it will eventually reside in Tok AK's garage!  :)

I just knew this was a great deal. Advertised on Craig's list for $3200. When I got there it was already sold for $4500. A good foot wetter. A fat wallet too! Geeze.

Does that include the 2.8 diesel,not many Cherokees came with the 2.8, they don't seem to have problems in the Liberty or Dodge pickups,I am a little concerned about the VM diesel I owned one before in a road boring machine

Clifford so far not good reviews I found, This guy said;
My 2012 Grand Cherokee overland has been a very good SUV.  Drives well, I like the looks, is comfortable and roomy.  My issue with the car is that at about 40K miles the dashboard started to bubble and warp.  Though I have an extended warranty, the deal (Rairdon of Kirkland, WA) says that they will not fix.  So, I'm stuck with a car that looks good from the outside and but is hideous on the inside.  I would not buy another 'luxury' car from Jeep, they clearly don't know how to make them and are not willing to stand behind their product.

And
Where it starts to fall short, however, is reliability. The VM Motori EcoDiesel has been plagued with durability issues since its release, leading to some drastic actions from Chrysler in response. First the engine's recommended oil viscosity was increased to 5w40 from the thinner 5w30 that the engine first used.Jan 23, 2019

Most said the 2011 to 2015 2.8 eco diesel were decent but did have some problems with computer things, sensors etc. but were good for 200,000 Miles before anything major.

I found a 2004 Special Edition v8 real clean inside and out 56,000 miles, transmission was replaced at 41,000 miles he showed me the $2700.00 bill.He wants $2000.00 for it because it has a rod through the block now and he has records of having the oil changed every 5,000 miles lol I am starting to wonder about these bullet proof Jeeps now and fuel mileage sucks on the V8 Jeeps

Well the 2002 through the 2006 have that problem with the tranny but the ones with 4.0 being it was not built by Jeep but AMC way back and is pretty good with a few fixable flaws.
Then you have the 3.7, 4.7, and 5.7 Hemi which have problems with the valve train coming loose and the valve seats were made out of powdered metal and the powder eventually gives up but in pieces and gets stuck under the edge of the valves. Engine gone.There is a 3.6 , 6cylinder that is suppose to be pretty good.
Did you know to replace the heater core you have to take out the whole dashboard on many models of the Cherokee?LOL

And being Jeep your tax dollar paid for all these problems with Jeep Chrysler.

I have been towing a 1994 Ford ranger 5 speed for about 15 or 20 years.
I know Ford says not to tow the overdrive transmission and after a bunch of years the thing got noisy and the clutch and throw out bearing. Had the bearings  replaces and new clutch and throw out bearing.

By the way the truck has 385 thousand miles with the original 4.0 v6.

Acquired a 1992 4x4 ranger with 5speed from a junkyard for minimum dollars.
Tow able 4 down by ford.. New tires on fancy Explorer rims .3.08 gears front and rear.
Rear came from the same Explorer. has disk brakes on rear.

Same 8.8 rear end but have to mount on the bottom instead of the top.

New tires and wheels,rear end and truck was less than a down payment.
Old un-empoyed people with a od bus have to be cheap

@Dave
How's your new to you Jeep treating you? We've been shopping and every time we see something to go look at (with $$$ in pocket) it sells before we get there! Would like to get one before spring so we can tow it to AK & leave it there...

try a dealer for a used one. Those classified ones have great prices but hard to score unless you are quick. Or consider something in another brand. Lots of 4 wd anymore.

The ones we've been too late on have happened mostly with dealers and also private owners. The used ones on Facebook Marketplace are scary to say the least - they've been chopped & customized to pieces. The WJs are a very popular breed with engines commonly living past 500,000 miles!

Dave the above statement got my attention and upon much more research my findings were: Due to steel valve seats in the aluminum heads the interference fit wasn't tight enough. With heating & cooling cycles the dissimilar metals worked their way loose & apart. The proactive remedy was to rework the heads to a tighter fit. Chrysler never issued a recall as they were never pressured because it wasn't a safety issue just a quality one.
It's true about the 3.7, 4.7, & 5.7L engines having the valve seat issue but that issue ended with the 2009 introduction of the Eagle Hemi with variable valve timing (vvt). That's why we went with the 2009 model.
We continue to pursue purchase of a XJ model Cherokee to keep in the AK garage. They seem to disappear faster than you can find them & seldom have less than 150,000 miles on them which is considered early in the IL4L's life.

Dan we looked at many before we found this one and finally at a used dealer in overland, Kansas. They wanted 6.700.00 and we traded our Jeep and some cash to add up to 6K and could not talk them down future. This was garaged and clean new tires 16's instead of the 15"s they come with. Interior was immaculate. It does have high mileage (231,758) but runs well.Shifts well. Has a few small oil leaks. But we figure with new 4.0 engines from Jegs, summit, and many others at $2,400.00 and tranny's at 1,500, axles at 500.00 a piece and tranfere cases at 700.00 you can have a new drive train for a lot less than a new car.
The nice thing about Cherokees as well as Jeeps everything is replaceable including body panels hoods doors etc.
Biggest problem we found was rust underneath but they do make new floor pans too, LOL

Dan in my searches I just put in 2001 or whatever Jeep cherokee sport near me in the search bar and got a ton of them. And yes even though we don't do FB we got that site to but found that the ones between 1000 and 2000 were cons or stolen.

I have not had significant trouble with this jeep and gets up to 28 mpg on the highway--if I keep my foot out of it.  Gets 20 mpg around town.

I would like to get an old ford ranger so I could put a motorcycle in the back.  Too many of the rangers up here are rusted to pieces.  A 4 cyl 5 spd w/ 7 ft bed would be perfect!
