We just bought a new toad. 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport 60th Anniversary edition.
Dave -

Nice new toy! I'm sure Doreen really appreciates having the A/C and the more comfortable ride!

Since this new toad is heavier than the CJ, you're 5C's little 6V71 may have to huff 'n puff quite a bit more to boogie down the boulevard. If that becomes an issue, remember that I've got access to the 1980 5C I bought awhile back that's got the 6V92N, the HT-740, and 3.33 rear axle gears. More HP, more torque, better transmission, and taller gears for better fuel mileage - or at least only 1600 vs 2100 rpm at 60 mph! A two-day swap for two wrenches working together - extra dropbox available, too. Bus is in Stockton, so would require a return to Californication for a few days. Just a thought to ponder. . .

In the meantime, enjoy the new Jeep!

We tow a 2000 Dodge Dakota 4.7 4 x 4 quad cab. Little heavy at 5000 lbs but has worked for us since new.

luvrbus

The Jeep GC Limited we are looking at is around 4500 lbs about a 1000 lbs lighter than the Envoy I don't if it would make that much difference in towing

Our 09 GC Limited is 4500#. 2000# lighter than the Sierra Quadrasteer. 1500# heavier than the CJ5. 5000# lighter than our heaviest trailer. But ya know the old dependable turtle has carted them all. Anchor out - yes. Uphill slow - yes. Get there safe - yes.  8)

The Envoy doesn't affect my fuel mileage or speed but you can feel it back there when taking off from a stop.Towing the Jeep YJ behind our Eagle I never knew it was there except 1 time when the transfer case exploded in Utah, beleive it or not but my military Humvee is lighter than the Envoy but wider and longer

The 98 Jeep wrangler was heavier actually because it had a frame and full roll cage stock at 3,303 to 3,362 lbs
The 2001 Jeep Cherokee because it was one of the first Unibodies at 2,928 to 3,300 lbs so not a problem. Ours is stock and lighter than our jeep was.

The Jeep Cherokee is one bulletproof vehicle. The fact it remained unchanged was a testament to its popularity and the notion of leaving well enough alone. They are harder to find in decent condition since most get molested and canibalized. We are still debating on putting my KTM Duke on a rack or bringing Maries Smart car.

Yea I had 2001 GC for my company car for year only problem I had was the cheap crankshaft sensor and oil pressure sender Jeep used 3 in a year under warranty and the 4.O L does not like gas with Oxygen added mine would run crappy using it lol then you read the manual and it told you what grade of gasoline to use

We just bought a new toed. 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport 60th Anniversary edition. Nice light truck with lots of storage room. 4.0, AW-4 Tranny and part time 4x4, New tires all around and base plates on the way. :^

Hey Dave we're seriously thinking on putting a second vehicle in the Tok AK garage eventually & prior to have a second vehicle to our one & only 09 GC. We like the body style of the late 90s to 01s as they have more room. We love our GC & are thinking on another one earlier model. I would think the 4L would tow a 21' boat and/or a utility trailer ok - what say you?

Compared to the prices on new cars or even 5 year old cars I can put a new drive train in and still be way under those prices. Aware of all the negatives and the overheat problem they had and some still have. we have the two working fans one is mechanical and the other is electronic. It has had the plastic pipe replaced from the water pump to metal and it has the heatshields already on the exhaust to intake manifold. It runs cool at 209 and stays there. Good oil pressure and had a rattle we thought was the tranny 231 but it turned out to be the fan schroud was not put in on the bottom. Two screws and popped it back in and the rattle was gone. We new the AC was working and not cooling but will replace the ac clutch before the next heat wave and refill system. Already tested it. New tires and wheel came on it. Rides a little better than the jeep wrangler but still a little stiff for me so will put in softer shocks and spring sometime. All in all for the price compared to all the ones we looked at here and in Missouri even California had a lot of rust buckets and this one was garage kept so only a few spots. :^
