A Successful Trip

Drove from Michigan to Phoenix. Without a single ounce of drama. I can't remember the last time this happened in a bus. Will be here in Scottsdale for a little over a month. It's hot here. Triple digits. And yet just a few days ago I could see my breath when I went outside in the morning.

Most of our trips are uneventful in the land of the bus BUT we don't travel with two small children and I don't have a wall between the driver and the passengers.

I'd like to chime in here... 8500 miles down - 1 gal. of oil and a slack adjusters adjustment - that's it! (So far) with 3000 to go... Relaxing yes boring not...

After posting how our trips are uneventful we left on a one week excursion.  For two days everything went as planned and the morning of the third day the mysteries started.  We did some work arounds and the trip was completed as planned BUT we lost the voltage regulator on the L10 which led to a series of unusual things happening.  Just goes to show that just when you think all is going well it can cause you to have an adventure instead of a road trip.

We completed our 2nd of two Alaska road trips. This last one went without issue. Went through 2 gallons of engine oil in 10,273 miles. The only time we put the coveralls on was to adjust the slack adjusters for the return trip home. Toward the end of the trip we think the front main oil seal is developing a leak and the fan hub (PTO) is developing movement but the ole' girl made it back in otherwise excellent condition. We always refer to road trips as an adventure!

Count your blessing Scott. Can't remember having a trip, and mine are all under 1000 miles round trip, that I didn't have to fix something Bus or house related. Always something it seems. Getting mighty tired of it. Wifey says for what I've spent on my 91 XL in the last 9 years, that we could stay at the best Hilton with room service. Whad be the fun in that.

The journey vs the destination.

Most busnuts are on a journey.

Scott's transportation needs are about the destination.

He MUST arrive to fulfil his ministry obligations. The cute foibles of an ornery coach are NOT cute, nor amusing, for Scott's purposes.

Basically, the coach supports his job, a situation very few of us are in, counting on the coach to get us to work.

Uneventful, reliable and boring are exactly what he needs, every time.

An 8 year old, low mileage coach coming out of a front line charter company would be a starting point, if sticking with buses.

He does a real fine job in his silversides. It was awesome seeing them all in the same area of the Blytheville rally. Many of them running alongside the best & newer ones.

I enjoy the journey to get to our destination. But the coach has to be reliable. I don't drive from one break down to the next, like some people. Everything is maintained in a preventive manner. I fix little things before they become big. Sure something can let go anytime, but that is no worst than on a commercial vehicle. I like "uneventful" and "reliable". Not boring to me.
