GM Steering Gear Lubricant

The manual shows steering gear lubricant (SG) should be used in the steering column bevel gear box.

The text describes a No. 0 oil.

Anyone know what the equivalent would be in modern lubricants? Would it be possible to top off what's already in there with the modern version or does it require a total draining?

The manual also reads that the level is topped off by through the plug opening on the bottom of the gear box. Seems odd to fill from the bottom - how does one accomplish this without losing what's already in there?

I'm working my way through the lubrication chart and don't really know what to do with this little piece.

I found one sold by John Deere as corn head grease that seems to be the same. Also found small 4oz tubes of an EP-0 grease which were sold for use in small equipment gear heads.

The little 4oz tube seemed like it would make it easier to 'inject' grease into the bottom of the gear box through the plug at the bottom. Since I don't think that much has oozed out over the years I'm sure that 4oz would be enough.

The manual states to remove vent to top off. Level with top of threads. My vent has brass threads, so is easily removable.

Richard, at 45 years of age, you might just drain and refill with new lube. Will probably need a solvent flush while you are at it.
