After my recent experience with my air dryer, I've been thinking a lot about maintenance and preparation. My bus didn't come with tag axle chains when I got it. I searched and read lots about tag axles and chains but couldn't find an answer to this: What size chain and pieces do I need?

When would someone need to chain up their tag axle? Flat tire?

A special chain, big loop to go over the hooks, little loop between them.

Who has a picture?

Yes, some tag brake or tire crisis, usually brought on by lack of maintenance.

Stealing a tag tire as a spare has been known to be done...

The local law enforcement will not ignore a bus running with it's hind leg hiked up like that,
Those days are long gone.

Not a time to be boldly going?

You could call DOT in Alaska. I remember Ice Road Truckers...they used chains all the time. Not joking  8)

Are you referring to tag axle chains for lifting the tag up or snow tire chains?

I sure hope we are talking about a chain which will hold the tag axle up...

Putting tire chains on the tag axle won't accomplish very much...

No problem. Anybody got a pic and a measurement of those tag axle chains?

I also have a 1984 MCI, my chains are kept in the top of the battery compartment. Have you checked there? I used them once when one of my brakes on the tag locked up, it allowed me to drive to the repair facility without much work. I've tried to attach a photo for you. Craig

Nice! Just what I needed! Thanks!

Yah, I've checked the battery compartment and no chains. I'll get some now that I know the sizing, though.

The end links on that pictured chain look small for fitting over the big hooks?

how did you hook this up?

The one end is slightly bigger and I think that fit over the upper hook, while the smaller end did fit over the lower hook. If I remember correctly, I think there was an air valve to shut off inside the compartment door and then I had to jack it up to get the chain on. Wasn't too big of a process. Craig
