So it's most likely not "just" a head job, but more likely an inframe at the least?

You could get lucky but 12.7 series 60 are so cheap now if the 11.1 needs more than head work replace the 11.1

My wife and i have discussed our options and feel that it would be the wisest course of action to simply abandone any plans for repairs on the 11.1 and look for a low mileage 12.7 to put in it's place. I have a lead on a recently overhauled unit with around 80k on it for around 7k.

I also know where there is a DL3 with a 12.7 in it in Mohave Valley AZ. Wonder if he would miss it?

I'm trying to come up with some ball park ideas on the r&r. Anyone know the flat rate number of hours for removel and installation of the 60 series in the D series MCI?

If its the one I am thinking of you better be able to run when "the persuader" comes walking out with him when they catch you. Not a good story will come from that.... Would like to be there to watch though,,,..... LOL ;D

Clifford is a big teddy bear. You think if I asked real nice he wouldn't mind? Lol. Seriously though Sonja is a sweet lady but I would not want to be the one to cross her.

Sorry about the engine issues...bums me out for you. Seems to be par for the course with our buses. I'm driving mine much less this year than the last two. I put nearly 20,000 miles on last year. This year, I'm hoping to keep it under 5,000. I put way too much $$$ into mine last year. And now I have a trans electronic issue. Always something. I wish toyota made a bus lol. Might be half way reliable.

92 Toyotas with that many miles have issues also, especially running on salted roads😮.

Same in Peru.  The buses look like the love child of a 2 pound tuna fish can mated with a portable propane tank in an Airstream trailer's nightmare.  And there were usually little things -- metal body strips, bits of insulation, odd wires, etc. -- hanging off under the body.

Pulled the trigger on a low mile reliabuilt 12.7 out of a D4000 with service documentation and one year warranty. Comes fully loaded less starter and alternator. The nice guy that was going to do the swap backed out literally 5 minutes before I was set to pay for the engine. Fortunately I was able to locate another shop just a few miles from me that is happy to take the work.
