I like to have the cold level right in the middle of the sight glass, so I can see the line so I don't get fooled by thinking I am looking at coolant instead of air.  It will usually go up above that when hot.

I deliberately overfilled my surge tank, drove until the coolant had expanded and come out of the overflow tube into my catch bottle, then after it had completely cooled down I marked the level on the sight gauge as the maximum cold fill level.   Easy!

Fill my tank up and let it overflow to where it wants to run. Has worked for 7 years so far.

All the Prevost books tells you about the sight glass is " if coolant is visible when cold it's good. All the Prevost people I know keep the glass covered
