Biff -

The stuff you buy at the RV store is way, way overpriced for what you actually need, plus several of the types will actually kill the "good" bacteria that does the decomposition work.

My coach has a 100-gallon black/grey tank.  After I drain & rinse, I put in 5 gallons of fresh water, then add one of those little enzyme tablets designed for septic tank systems you can pick up at any hardware store cheap compared to the RV store.  I'm currently using ZEP Septi-Pak tablets I picked up at Home Depot - a bag of six sells for about $12 - and I've had no issues with them.  Because of the size tank I have, I'll wait until it's 2/3 - 3/4 full before dumping, and have not had to add a second tablet because of malodorous fumes.

Since I have a house toilet, I don't have to worry about additives.

I don't use any tank additives. I also don't use anything anti-bacterial for soaps or cleaners either.

When I drain the holding tank, I leave a little in the tank to feed the good bacteria until I add more 'bacteria food'.  :-[
I haven't noticed anything more than a light musty odor, never any strong or offensive odors. Considering what I put in the tank, I'd say I've got some GOOD bacteria in there ! :o

I inject air into my tanks, have a 24V air pump and can also use the bus air, only need 2-5 psi.

An old school charter driver will tell you, there is NOTHING that will stop that little house back there to stop stinking, once it starts...

Use your imagination, old school charter drivers did, and NOTHING works...

A skin of transmission or engine oil on the top of the water was suspected of suppressing odour while parked...

As noted, a healthy bacterial culture and some fresh water. Chemicals just kill the good bacteria, making it stink, once the perfume wears off.

Happy coaching!

I'm with RJ.  The enzyme/bacteria stuff that is used for septic tanks works great and is really cheap.  Although I really only used it sometimes when I remember to.  That means most times it just works on its own like a septic tank.  The only problem we have had is if the coach sits for a long time and air is not getting into the tank, the anaerobic bacteria builds up and can create quite a stink.
