Easy band-aid repair for the bus but that engine had been abused so who knows how long before it does it again.   Here is a better pic from Kevin   I'll change it if that's what she decides to do. It's going to cost her around 2k if I do it and 1k of that is airfare.  Pretty sure that's like a 5k repair most other places.  She said it didn't get hot when it happened and they didn't lug it up any hills so I'd like to know how it happened.  Is the block damaged or misshapen from the overheat before? That piston looks knarly too. Was it oil starved? More questions than answers but if she wants a new kit in it I'll do it.  If she looses her toad and drives it up the mountains right I think it will hold out unless something else reveals its ugly head when or if we tear into it.

I you decide to do it, I have the tools to check the block.

I'll be curious to see how the liner comes out. It may be a loose fit.

The other ports were clean and dry.

Too bad they installed the engine right over the trailer hitch!

Kevin, for the love of God please tell me that the trailer hitch is not welded to those cradle cross members that have to come off to get the oil pan off??

Yeah the piston looks like a ginsu knife serrated edge.

Maybe it was too covered in grease and oil to tell if it was welded or bolted :)

Scott, To be honest, I didn't pay attention to how it mounted. It was exactly where we needed to work though. Removing the exhaust manifold gave us the room we needed. Dave had already unbolted the cooler, so it had some movement. The biggest plus was charging the air tanks and getting the bus back up off the ground. It sure looked sad with the bags down.

I asked Dave to find the keys to the hitch lock, Getting that off the back helped a lot too.

I would consider removing the bumper, Might open up a larger work space.

As was mentioned, It is very oil soaked. Everything is well lubed.

Wow, I'm no expert, but with so much missing aluminum on that piston, I sure would be surprised if that motor makes it more than an hour at freeway speeds. If Cat lady needs the bus in SD, perhaps having it towed there would be better progress than spending 3K and then an hour down the road do it all again? So close, yet so far away. I personally would be skeptical driving that into the desert.... maybe if she makes it to Cajon pass she can coast into the valley... every mile will count I suspect.

I'll be in Phoenix Monday. I can stop by and look at it and have some friends there and there is a bus company on 7th and they seem to be helpful.
don't panic, just fix it before.... 1966 mc5, 1986 102a2

The Cat is out of the bag now with all the publicity and photos she is going to have a tough time selling that one without spending some major bucks  :D

I don't think she'll be too disappointed as that one came from a Kickstarter campaign too - I believe.  I think she's got about 70k into it though, which is about standard investment for a bus owner into a 10k bus from my experience  :)
