Hey guys. I have an Allison 3 speed. When we start her up for the first time each day, she has to go about 3 to 5 miles before shifting to 3rd. After that, no more issues. Any ideas?

If you are as little as one gallon low on transmission fluid there is a inhibiter switch that prevents the V730 from shifting lout of 2nd into third.  You may just be low on fluid which stops the upshift until the fluid gets hot and expands.

I've read other posts in the past that this is pretty common.

Mine does this in cold weather or if the fluid level is a bit low. Sometimes I can coax it by dancing a bit on the throttle or fully letting off and quickly pushing again.

Sometimes I may have to drive 5-10 mi if I go directly onto the freeway without any local driving.

Try cleaning the screen filter in the oil passage to gov. Check book for location. Behind plug on output end.  olebusman

I completely agree with the above and that is where I'd go first.  On the other hand, back a million years ago I owned a small batch of rental cars (60) many of which were prior government owned Dodge Diplomats and Chrysler 5 th Aves.  Many of these developed 2/3 upshift problems at around 200K miles.  With nothing to loose, I tried Trans X trans sealer and conditioner and in every case (about 20 reps), 1 quart of the elixir "fixed" the problem in a mile or two!?!  Crazy I know, but that's what happened.  Will it work in a bus--I don't know.  I do know that after having performed the proper service as outlined above with no success, I'd chuck in a case of Trans X and see what happened.  Just remember, Ya pays Ya money an Ya takes Ya chances!

Good luck and please let us know what you discover.  Jack
