Does anybody know what pound shock/struts are needed for both sizes of 4106 baggage doors. I want to put 2 on the big doors and only 1 on the small doors.  thanks  olebusman

Another good source for info and good pricing on Columbia struts is Stampede Distributing. They are on the web and located in Oregon.

Get the strongest ones you can find. Otherwise the geometry of the mounting will determine the force required, two on each door is better.

Finding a mounting base is the hard part.

Measure carefully, closed length is important. It takes some experimenting.

That's funny, I was just about to ask the same thing about my 4107 bay doors. Those suckers are heavy :D. I want to replace the ones on there now (they're completely shot) and I have two options from Suspa, the "original" replacements (160#) or an identical strut (length, diameter, etc) that is 187#. Sounds like I should pick up the 187# units.

FYI, as a side note, in case you didn't know, make sure to mount your struts with the black part up/higher (in the position the strut spends most of its time in). Mounting it "shiny side up" doesn't allow the seal packs to lube correctly and it could cause premature failure. This is according to Suspa, anyway.
Also the best pricing I've found on Suspa struts is directly from Suspa. Everyone else's prices are completely ridiculous.

4107 doors are completely different from 4104/06 doors.

Best place to shop for struts (anything for that matter) is on the net.

Installing one strut per door will tear your hinge rubber quickly, use one per side.>>>Dan

Thanks all. I just got back from the races so now its time to get something done. This gives me many options.  olebusman

The gas struts are the sworn enemies of the rubber hinge. Particularly if you try to use just one as mentioned above.  The struts continue to apply force to the hinge even when the door is closed, so if you get one that is strong enough to do the job, it will rip the hinge.  Even if you have the stainless steel hinge, the single strut can work to deform the hinge track and create a problem.  Dividing the load between two struts will work, but do not oversize them or the same thing will happen.
You don't have to believe everything you think.

Thanks Lin, I seem to remember years ago someone made a kit for sale. I fully intend to use two struts per door. olebusman
