'96 Land Cruiser Toad

We have a '96 Toyota Land Cruiser that are wanting to tow behind our bus. Conflicting info on the web. Has anyone had any experience getting one of these down the road?

As long as its got a transfer case you can put in neutral should be no problem..

If it is a all wheel drive the answer is no but like Matt said the 4 wheel drive with a transfer case can be

Could be iffy. My Geo Tracker 4X4 auto trans can be (and is) towed 4 down with the tc in neutral but per the owners manual must have the engine and trans fired up every 200 miles to lubricate the tc. Hopefully I'll find a cheap driveline disconnect for it some day, but I usually am ready to get out of my bus after 200 miles anyway so no big deal. Jack

I found this Toyota site and they say "no" to 4 down on your 96 Land Cruiser.

The Tracker/Sidekick 4x4 if like my 1993 Sidekick turns the front and rear drive shafts when the t-case is in neutral so you don't need to run engine. The front shaft is located in the bottom of the t-case so when it spins it picks up the lube and transfers it to the top gears. if you have auto-locking hubs you may have a problem. I think they are all wheel drive Matt sames as a Lexus 50/50 not a 4 wheel drive like a Jeep.I had a Jeep Eliminator 2WD with a 5 speed you could not tow 4 down cost me 1200 bucks for transmission work to find that out

I'd go to this source and see what base plates are offered for your rig. If anything else is required such as a tranny pump or driveline disconnect, they usually recommend it. If they offer your base plates with no comments, you can still call the dealer and ask. HTH

I don't feel like typing a long answer. So just look. Learn. And imitate.

1. Connect truck to bus
2. Put transfer case in neutral
3. Put transmission in neutral not necessary (but I'm OCD)
4. Leave key in ACC position
5. Connect lights

Drive away.
I'm an active and supporting member of iH8mud which is mainly devoted to everything Land Cruiser. We have a three page technical discussion there that gets detailed enough to discuss the drivetrain and transfer case workings as well as tests using temp guns during tow tests. In short, the consensus with 80 and 100 series Land Cruisers was that it was perfectly safe to tow 4 down provided the transfer case is in neutral. Several of us have been doing this for thousands of miles without issue whatsoever.
My 1998 Land Cruiser 100 series is triple locked, all time AWD and I've towed it thousands of miles. We are full timers so we tow a lot. Ok. That tired me out. Gonna go take a nap.

Scott, with all due respect, wouldn't it be safer to find out for sure if a specific vehicle can be towed four down---rather than finding out it can't be the hard way$$$$$$$? The 96 Land Cruiser may well be able to be towed four down for all I know. As an example, I do know that my Geo Tracker 4X4 can't be towed four down without taking some specific precautions as outlined in the owners manual and shown below. Jack

I see the Land Cruiser being towed with the engine running ? must be for lubrication purposes our Lexus says you can tow it 4 down stopping every 100 miles and running it through all the gears and not to exceed 50 mph
