Pulled the valve cover options plate and trying to decode what the engine is/has.

I suspect it was rebuilt in 1988 but we are not sure nor do we know what options or injectors (power level) we have.

Here's what's on the plate. If there's a document somewhere will all this listed I'd love to know where so I can save it.
Anything jump out? Anything you guys can tell me about what we have?

The first thing to do is verify that the engine serial number matches the valve cover data plate.  The plate could be off another engine.

The data tag info is best deciphered by a dealer, Clifford may have the codes..

Unfortunately 25 years of dirt and oil make finding the stamped number on the block next to impossible without me removing the engine and steam cleaning the whole thing. I just spent 20 minutes rubbing off all the places I think it should be and came up with snake eyes.

It's not an issue right now. Everything runs OK. I was just hoping to find out what I could about what we just got. So far it's been one surprise after another... mostly pleasant.

I had this document that shows how to decode the model number but the location of the serial number was confusing to me.

So I should be looking above/behind the starter?

I just found mine near the end of the exhaust manifold on the side opposite of the starter.  It was covered in no less than half inch of grease and oil.  If you're having trouble reading the numbers, try taking a picture of it with your phone.

I apologize for the crap photo but I'm laying on my back and this is as good as it gets with my phone. This is the back side of the motor behind the oil filter where all the info I can find seems to say the number should be.

I think it should be around the drain tube so after taking this picture I soaked this in brake cleaner and cleaned it off but there's nothing on the block that I can see except the casting marks. I can take another picture tomorrow (it's raining now) showing the clean block but I'm not even sure I'm in the right spot. I've swallowed a fair bit of dirt and oil at this point laying under this monster.  :)

On a side note, if I just changed the oil and it immediately is pitch black on the dipstick again, would you change it a second time right away? Drive it 1000 miles then do it? Wait the full 10,000 miles? The previous owner said "the oil changes itself. I just add more as it burns/leaks" so the first thing I did was order filters and oil. I'm sure it hasn't been changed in years.  >:(

The last time I saw oil like this was a customer in our shop with a diesel Jetta that hadn't been changed in 30,000 miles.

I am not 100% sure, but I think it would be a little higher up than your circle.  Watch that video again a few times. It took me nearly two hours to find mine-- keep at it, it is there...somewhere.

My engine looks a little different too. Instead of the 4 cover plates I have two larger ones with two bolts in the center and a metal tab between them.

That's why I wonder if mine is in a different place.

BTW, is your number in that second picture? I can't see it in the close up.

My number is not in the second picture-- It is one of the places it could have been.  I nearly got myself stuck between the frame rail and the engine taking that picture.  See my earlier post for where I found my number.

Anyone know why my air box access plates are two big plates on each side instead of the four smaller ones I seem to see on all the other 8V71 engines?

Am I just reading into this too much? I was thinking it may have some hint as to where my missing serial number may be since I can't seem to find them at either of the drains on the block.
