Hello Folks,

Did a search but I'm not able to download Zimtok's file regarding instructions to change generator to alternator on the '04. Mine quit charging on a trip from So Cal to Pahrump, NV. I have the original manuals for the old generator set-up, but mine's a gear driven 50 dn, I think? Anyone have the conversion specifics, including wiring diagram that I might download? Appreciate it!

Otherwise, bus ran great all the way to Nevada and back. Had a pretty good time and towed a car back home. It was great to get behind the wheel of the Ol' Mare once again... been over a year since she's moved. Changed the fuel filters and checked all the fluids and she fired up instantly! Just need to sort out this charging issue, and frankly, electrical is not my forte. Thanks for any help in advance!

If I'm reading this right you already have an alternator...correct?  If so you just need to look at later model wiring diagrams to see how it's done, from what I can tell there are one wire  alts and 2 wire alts, the 2 wire alts having an "exciter" wire that kicks in the field, can't give you more as I am not looking at a wiring diagram.  FWIW it is often just the voltage regulator that needs work/replacing.
Also maybe change the subject of this ? to:  "Wiring diagram for 50DN."

Hey Zub,

Thanks for the reply. Yes, you are correct, this coach has been converted to a gear-driven 50DN alternator which has served us perfectly in over 12 years of use. It suddenly quit charging while on the road to Nevada couple weeks ago. When I checked voltage output at alternator posts, it was a steady 12 regardless of engine RPM. I knew it wasn't charging because I saw the ammeter gauge needle drop suddenly from 13+ to 12 and just stay there while flying down the 15 towards Vegas.

By the time we made it back home to SoCal the following week (after dark) the headlights were getting a bit dim. I had my deep-cycle 6-volt house batteries connected to the coach batteries via the solenoid that charges house batt's off of the engine alternator while driving down the road - which provided us with a bit more time.

I've since received some feedback from Zimtok, JLVickers and siberyd (thanks guys!!!) which I'll be putting to (hopefully!) good use this weekend. Working all week at the moment... Ugh. Back to the old grind!  ::) Still, I'm damn happy to have gainful employment in this day and age. Sure did enjoy a few days off and stretching the 'Ol Mare's legs down the highway! I love this old bus!!! :)

Cheers,
