102D3  11 liter Series 60  Starter engages and makes hammering noise but engine does not turn over. Pulley moves a couple of degrees but does not round. Started just rebuilt Batteries relatively new and freshly charged. Any suggestions???   Thanks Rod

If you can bar the engine over with a socket then it is a minor problem if not it will be a major problem pull the valve cover and check to be sure the engine was updated with the new head bolts they will have white heads  some of those buses at Las Vegas had the upgrade some didn't hoping for the best for you

Check the coolant and be sure it is clean not a smoke color

Sounds like the starter ring gear on the flywheel/torque converter is damaged, or if the starter was replaced, it could have the wrong number of teeth on the end gear.>>>Dan

Rod,

Starter issue. Ours does has done that in the past. Always has been the starter. I wired up a switch right next to the starter, back there, so I can hear it spin, or not. Helps diagnose things sometimes.

There is a magnetic switch in line to the starter that will go bad but it either works or no works bar it over to eliminate any internal problems and go from there all it cost is 5 minutes and a little sweat

Check your batteries and be sure they are wired in series not parallel
