DD13 (OM471) in Setra Buses

I see that Setra buses are now using the OM471 (Mercedes designation for the Detroit DD13) in their buses.  One of the concerns with the new DD engines was being able to drive multiple items off the front of the crankshaft.  The DD engines are designed with a rear camshaft gear train (actually two gear trains).  One runs the dual overhead camshafts and the other runs the high pressure fuel pump and the air compressor with low pressure fuel pump and power steering pump.
Then on the front of the Setra engine (pull up a Setra brochure on their site) they have four pulleys on the front of the engine.  The rearward big pulley is the stock to power the water pump and one of the alternators (on a truck also the A/C compressor).  The next forward pulley on a truck would power the fan, but on the bus just powers the second alternator.  The third pulley powers the big over the road A/C compressor with the third alternator running off the compressor.  The fourth pulley is a double V belt for running the hydraulic pump to power the radiator fan.  My guess is that they also have roller bearings on the nose of the engine to support all the belt tensions.
Looks like the Detroit/Mercedes designed DD engines are off to being a World engine.  Good Luck, TomC

Tom, I wonder how long the DD engine will last in their current configuration. With the new smog laws comming out for 2014 I am already hearing about the new engines that are being tested for emissions.

I love how they call it the 471. I bet some oldtime DETROIT diehards wet their pants when they saw that given the new technology getting 400+ HP out of the old 4-71 isn't out of the relm of possible. :)

That plus the big fact that the ancient but soos cool 471 sounds soosss cool on a quiet winter night rowing through the gears of an equally old but also cool 10 speed roadranger transmission.  Then we hit the Jake Brake going down the hill!  Auughhh....regression!  HB of CJ (old coot) :) :) :)

Don- the current DD engines are going to be in place for the foreseeable future.  The 2014 rules for green house gases and fuel mileage requirements-Detroit is ALREADY certified!  So no problems there. The only change that are going to be made to the engines is programming.  They are going to come out with a different engine configuration-that's a DD15 without the turbo compounder.  When that happens, I would OK the DD15 for oil rig use.  Until then the DD13 should be used (470hp and 1650lb/ft torque is still more then enough power).
I hoped you would see this post-since it is possible to get many PTO's on the front pulley (Oilrig?).  Good Luck, TomC

Also found out that Fuso (Mitsubishi) is using the same basic DD13 engine in their heavy duty trucks in Japan.  Good Luck, TomC

Is it only the DD15 that Detroit is keeping in the Diamler family?  Can't anyone buy the DD13 now?

Well MCI and VAN-HOOL offers the DD-13 as options. PIERCE fire trucks offer DETROIT engines as options as well and they are not part of DAIMLER unless...

luvrbus

Dailmer has 17% stake in Federal Signal which owns Okhosh the builder of Perice fire trucks with the stock down for Federal at $5.25 they may own it all by the end of the day lol you play the stock don't you Milton ? this type stuff is easy to chase down but not with Google
Life is short drink the good wine first

You are correct but FEDERAL owns EONE at last count not OSHKOSH whom PIERCE is a division. Heck I don't know it's not my fault the world keeps changing like this. Besides, I own stock in CUMMINS which is rumored about to be taken over by DISNEY... just kidding.
