1"-drive Budd wheel socket

I'm looking for a 1"-drive Budd socket for my wheel nuts that I'll use with my 40"-long breaker bar, not with an impact wrench. The Budd sockets I've seen, such as Proto and Armstrong, appear to have quite shallow 1.5" hex openings, and I'm worried that sockets like those may slip off the nut if I'm not using an impact wrench - it's easier to keep the socket pushed onto the nut when using an impact wrench than when using a long breaker bar. I'll make a support stand for use with the 12" extension to reach the inner nuts, but this stand will only support the downward load, not apply any lateral force onto the nuts.

Does anyone here in bus-land use a 1"-drive Budd socket with a breaker bar, and if so what make of socket is it, and have you had any problems with it wanting to slip off the nuts?

I use a 3/4" drive BUDD socket with a 36" torque wrench and it works just fine without slipping. I haven't seen a BUDD socket in 3/4" or 1" drive that isn't impact rated.

I've never seen one either. I'm definitely going to use an impact socket.

Mine is 3/4 impact also with HF 3/4 ' impact to take them off but torque them back on. Socket was 32.00 at Capital Brake West Sacramento CA.

Mine is an Armstrong socket.

Mine came from NAPA truck parts - just your basic Budd impact socket. Its 3/4 drive and I turn it with a 36" swing handle controlled by a 4 foot pipe cheater. It stays on just fine with no other support.

John, they are awfully proud of that about 10.00 to much. Try a trucking supply house they are just as good and cheaper.FWIW

OTC makes the socket you are looking for around 60 bucks

Ah, wonderful! I can get the OTC 1949 socket from California Tool Co. through NAPA, so I'll give them a try. Thanks.

I also have to get a 12" extension - these are more expensive than the breaker bar itself. When I have everything I'll be able to change wheels and check the nuts myself, without relying on Good Sam ERS and without trusting that my generator and compressor and an impact wrench are all in good working order (if any one part isn't working, then I'm dead in the water!).

The 1" drive OTC BUDD socket can be purchased from Amazon for $30 including shipping. I didn't get the OTC because they don't make a 3/4" drive version. I was able to able to get a good deal on an brand new 12" extension on Ebay.

The price isn't so bad when you realize you are getting two sockets.

The shallow sockets are nice because they don't make contact with the wheel, marring it. I use a plastic mar ring regardless of which socket, but with a deep socket you will for sure need it, or mark up your wheel.

I just use two sockets. One is a deep 1.5" from a socket set, the other is the dedicated square Budd socket.
