When your around guys&Gals/busnuts like you it is easy to ask.   Where do you get the cable to link your computer from the usb port to the ddec port/info port.  The port I have  has 6 pins with 4 being used- is a deutch (sp)connector. Do I need to call Prevost?  Where do you buy cables to let your computer to talk/recieve from another?  Will same cable hook directly up to the ECM on the engine (DDEC IV) or do I need another.  Learning for me might seem simple for you guys.   Bob

Bob, it depends on what software you want to talk to.  Each software package needs a translator that converts the engine computer protocol (J1708 in the case of DDEC) to something it can deal with.

For example, with SilverLeaf, the cable is provided and it has a pretty sophisticated circuit board in the JIB that does that job.

If you find DD software for your computer, you will need something like:

With the Magikey, there are two different versions.  The one above is a parallel port unit.  Most modern computers don't have a parallel port.  The USB version generally goes for $500 or more.

I believe a trip to Detroit (Clarke power) in our area is in order. I do have enough knowledge in hand to ask questions now. I do better one on one than on phone in this case. Seems they can see the total loss expression on my face.   I am starting to understand! Hopefully when it has sunk in it will be a moment of ---that was simple.    Thanks!

Bob, be sure to keep us posted on the cost of the software.  The last I heard, it was pretty pricey.
