CAN WE SHIP ONE TO YOU?

This is for all the Eagle people who frequent this board and maybe some other brand of bus owner?  As I have not started the bus and taken it out lately (because of all this other work I have been doing) I fired it up the other day and of course the air buzzer went off.

Normally, this will occur for a little bit, and then it will shut DOWN, this day it didn't.  Another thing that came to mind is the fact that we are getting ready to push off on a 4,000 mile trip out west, and I really do not want to listen to a buzzer all day long.

So I start crawling around the old hoopie like a Monkey on a Jungle Jim looking for the source of my irritation, I locate the buzzer, I thump it.  Any good bus nut knows, when things go wrong, the first thing you do is thump it ... the second? ... You go get a hammer.  But that is another post.

I thumped the buzzer and I thumped the gauge, I opened up the access door to the air system and thumped my head!  We are batting 400 now for sure.  I also remember something Artvonne said this week or recently:

"There will always be failures we cant foresee. We could rebuild and overhaul everything, replace it all with brand new, and still have a major failure simply because we are human, and things we make, break, and sometimes when its a bad time."

And then I felt it, a little sharp blast of air hit my hand, here is the problem.  It is a low pressure switch for the rear of the air brake system, it is out of whack.  Leaking air profusely around the base of the switch.

Trying all shade tree mechanic methods to repair or stop the air leak proves unsuccessful, so we are once again off to the races.  Finding a part for a bus that is almost thirty years old ... Good luck.  I rank this in importance with my first bicycle or a bad case of the flu, depending on my mood.

First stop was NAPA store in El Reno, trying my best to save myself a 35 mile round-trip to OKC and back.  The guy says, "Can I help you?" and I say, "Yeah, maybe?  You got anything like this" (and I show him the switch).

He looks at it and says, "What it come off of?" and I say, "Bus" and then he says "What kind of bus?" (like he is going to know the difference, are we having fun yet?) and I say, "83 Eagle."

He says "I aint got nuthin' like that." (most likely a college grad in Oklahoma) so I say, "I have a reference number for it" he says, "Won't do any good."

So then I smile, and say, "Okay pard, amuse me, just try it."  Several minutes later, he says to me, "I done ran three pages of truck stuff and it don't come up." (Another indictment of public education in my home state)  So much for NAPA ...

I drive to Oklahoma City and pull up at Fleetpride.  "What can I do for ya?"  So I say (almost half-heartedly) "You have anything like this?"  He picks it up, looks at it and then says, "Not in stock, it would have to be special order, you got a ref. number?

So I say, "Yeah, you bet, it is BW#280337N."

Whirrrrrr - click, computer says "Two of 'em in LA and Nine in Seattle, how many do you want?"

So I tell him "two."  (one to fix it one for a spare)

He then says, "They are pricey.  looks like 'Bout thirty bucks each, you still want two?

"Yeppers."

Five days later, UPS like a loyal brown dawg, drops 'em on my porch.  I install it in the bus, at 85 PSI the buzzer shuts off and I am once again a Happy Kamper.

Now here is the rub, look at the box.

Bendix an American Company, Elyria Ohio 44035.  One more thing, it was Assembled In Mexico.  But NAPA could not find it?  This taught me one very important fact of life, which I will now freely share with all of you.  I found out that I need NAPA like I need a hole in my head.

If any of you Eagle boys have this same problem, now you know where you can find one, just go to Fleetpride.

Watch those right-handers.

I'm quite sure that you have two low air switches for the front and rear tanks, so the spare was a good idea.

I know NAPA sells a lot of generic low pressure oil switches, is there a generic low pressure switch that could be adapted, something that would work in a pinch?

I found it fascinating to learn that up until 1980, RR cars had two sets of ignition points, two condensors, and a second ignition coil, so that in case of a failure you could simply switch connections and off you go again.

I located four of them on my bus.

I know a guy who is parting out an old bus, and he is sending me four of them.

So few realize that cracking your head open often prevents ya from getting a nasty bump on yer shoulder.  Mysterious ways, Don, mysterious ways. ;D

Never considered that one at all.  Uncle Frank stepped on a yard rake and it came up fast!  Pow!  Right between the eyes, he dressed in women's clothing for a long time after that, but he is okay now.

Usually I can get most anything from NAPA as long as it isn't a complete oddball part.  They won't have it at the store 99% of the time, but 95% of the time the warehouse has it and I can have the same or next day.

I tried that Bendix number on NAPA's website and it appears indeed they do not have it.  Pretty much everything NAPA has you can find on the website.

Well that is good to know (I tried that Bendix number on NAPA's website and it appears indeed they do not have it.) I certainly had my doubts about it myself.  I know they usually can get it when I want it, but most of the time, I have to wait for it (I can have that for you in a couple of days).

It turns out now, there are cheaper one's to be had, but it is fixed, all is well in my world, I can now sleep the peace of a baby (which is getting up every two hours to use the bathroom, sort of like a bad prostrate problem).
