Planning a trip in a couple of weeks from Oklahoma to Wyoming for my wife's family reunion.  Has anyone ever taken their bus on Hwy 14 out of Sheridan up the east side of the Big Horn Mountains to Burgess Junction.  Looks pretty tight on the map but can't really tell much.  Do not want to start up a road that I may regret.

I think I read in the Casper paper last week that Hwy 14 is closed due to slides. Might want to verify that.

I've never been on it. Was on 16 a few years ago in the pickup. I would do it in the bus, but might have hesitated when I was less experienced.

As I understand it it is the west side from Graybull that is closed due to slides but the east side is ok but yes you are right.  I will monitor the situation before I head out.

Hwy 16 looks like a more major road on the Streets and Trips map.

That stretch of 14 is not all that bad but it has some good grades as you are climbing to 10,000 ft and crooked just before the junction and about the same coming from the west as Gumpy said check for slides with the hiway dept.
You won't be doing great speeds on the hi way it was 2nd gear most of the time with my 8v92 lol and 16 is a cake walk compared to 14

good luck

Both routes have a lot of snake turns...and the elevation (9000 to 10000 feet) is the big issue with a bus.

In my opinion the lower route #16 is a better choice if you are going to do that trip.

When are you planning the Wyoming trip?  We are having our Rally in the Rockies the 24th of August here in Cody....Can you make that???

Safe travels

I would really like to make the rally but our trip is the second week on July.  Unfortunately Hwy 16 does not take us where we need to go.  The destination is the junction of hwy 14 and 14A at the Elk View Lodge just south of Burgess Junction

I did hwy 212 (Beartooth Hwy) north of 14 without any problems in my 4106. I don't think you will have a problem.

Not that many options for you to get to Burgess Jct from anywhere take your time on any route up to Burgess and you will be ok the 6v92 may not be a mountain goat but it will get you there

good luck

This photo is from hwy14 twix Graybull and Dayton.  I was not in a bus but the road is not that bad.  I am one who does not like heights, don't like driving switchbacks in a bus or a car.  I don't like any of it.  I don't like it because of my lack of experience.  Now that I have been to that stretch of highway I think back and believe I would not have a problem driving the bus on it.  Oh this picture was in June.  They just had a big snow storm 2 weeks before we got there.

I found this on Google just now:
Wyoming Department of Transportation The Wyoming Department of Transportation has closed a stretch of U.S. Highway 14 because of a 100-foot landslide 31.5 miles east of Greybull.

About 100 feet of U.S. Highway 14 near Greybull is in danger of being lost because of a landslide.

The road about 31.5 miles east of Greybull is closed indefinitely after several attempts to keep it open, according to a Wyoming Department of Transportation media release.

Movement of the highway above Shell Falls was first discovered Friday, leading to the road's first closure on Saturday night. The highway reopened Sunday following repairs but was closed again Sunday evening. The road was reopened Monday afternoon following repairs, but was closed yet again about 8 p.m. Monday after an assessment by WYDOT geologists and engineers.

"The slide and 100-foot section of highway are moving at a rapid rate, and they dropped another eight inches Monday night," said Keith Compton, WYDOT district construction engineer in Basin. "We believed we would lose the highway Monday night, but as of today, it's still there."

Compton said the outline of the "circular failure-type slide" is visible.

"We were hoping to keep the road open during daylight hours, but it is proving to be difficult," Compton said. "For safety reasons, the road is currently closed."

WYDOT is assessing ways to build a detour on the uphill side of the sliding highway.

While U.S. 14 remains closed, motorists can use U.S. Highway 16 via Worland and U.S. Highway 14A as alternative routes from Greybull to Sheridan.

WYDOT encourages truck drivers, tour bus drivers and drivers of heavily loaded vehicles to use U.S. 16 or U.S. Highway 310 to reach the Sheridan area.
