wejust bought our first bus 84 eagle with a 6v92 drove it 300 plus miles home loved it. we drove 70 to 75 mph on 81 through virginia and west verginia no problem. when we got on 68 in maryland going up the mountains the largest one got down to 20 mph had to let it go at her pace or black smoke covered the whole road (really bad) .temp stayed at 180 onthe mountains got up to 205 on the gage went right back down on going down hill. when we first drove the bus it semed very slow to accelerate and black smoke if you tried to give her fuel. it does have a few exhaust leaks near the blower. dont want to sound stupid but never delt with detroit diesel before . how can i tell if it is a turbo or not? and were should i start to fix the problem .we live in cumberland md. and we have 7 kids and need to make it safe for us it is a entertainer bus. thnx mike

OK will step out .If you have a turbo (which is probable) it will have a exhaust pipe running to it on top of the engine.and out to muffler. this turbo sets on top of a blower .If your exhaust to the turbo is leaking the turbo will not be supplying enough air to the engine causing black smoke. fix exhaust. Welcome to the board! just remember the only dumb question is one not ask.Bob

When you open the engine compartment door the first thing you should see is the turbo and piping on your model of Eagle the turbo mounts on the front of the engine.
On the dash there should be a gauge for turbo boost if it is not reading + 20 lbs under load start repairing leaks sound to me like you have a bad exhaust pipe flange but pull the big rubber off the turbo and check for any rubbing it will be shinny on the housing if the turbo is dragging I hope that is not the problem
This is a good board but to let you know we have one just for Eagles repairs in the tech section www.eaglesinternational.net enjoy the Eagle one fine bus you bought.

good luck

Mike, is this an auto or manual trans? did you downshift as you hit the hills? What is your fuel milage so far? 81 thru there is easy in a bus kinda like a roller coaster up and down up and down. If you arent familar with Detroits, you have to keep them in the power band, the revs up, the reason for downshifting. Even with an automatic you might need to pull her down a gear yourself to keep her from lugging. Lugging the engine gives you the black smoke also and the high temps. good luck. There is an awesome article on the busnut.com board by RJ on driving and shifting if you havent seen it, its worth checking out.
we love our buses!!! NE Pa or LI NY, or somewhere in between!
