Perkins engines were used alot in older cruising sailboats awhile ago. Never seen a catkins or perkapillar before. I could never tell the difference from a Perkins and a Westerbeke engine from the profile.
we love our buses!!! NE Pa or LI NY, or somewhere in between!

Brian,

I believe that Cat purchased Perkins.    These are very good engines, and you get CAT support "service and parts"

The price is very good for the HP and NEW baby CAT..

I used to work for Perkins - but long before Catapiller were on the scene. When I was there they were owned by a Canadian group - can't quite remember the name, but it was something like 'Diversity'. They owned the Lucas electrical component company as well. Then Catapiller bought them - and now the company is called 'Perkins Shibaura' - no idea where the Shibaura comes from.

I can't help with any info on this engine...as has been said, they were big in the small-engine market, but whether this particular unit is a Perkins design that's been painted yellow, or Cat design with a Perkins badge, I've no idea.

A shameless plug for my business - visit www.magazineexchange.co.uk for back issue magazines - thousands of titles covering cars, motorbikes, aircraft, railways, boats, modelling etc. You'll find lots of interest, although not much covering American buses sadly.

The C1 is built by Shibaura of Japan that is a joint venture between Cat and Shibaura has been for years powers most of the small Cat equipment and you see it on generators like PowerTech and others good little engine competes with Kubtoa I have one of their compact tractors with the New Holland name tag

good luck

Yes, Cat bought Perkins at some point.  My Powertech generator has a Cat engine, but it is really a Perkins.  The block or something is still labeled Perkins.

Brian, if you have that type injection pump like the ones for sale you have a Shibaura engine,Perkins used the Lucas CVA round rotary injection pump,Isuzu also used the same system as Shibaura engine fwiw those engines are made in GA from Japan parts call it a Perkins if you wish

As a British car nut I'm sure that Perkins was originally British and that they go back many years. I think they go back to at least the '40s and probably earlier.

Perkins engines were used many years on refrigerated semi-vans, towed one of them hauling fresh eggs for a few years. Never failed us even one time.

If you're thinking of making your own generator, you should take a look at the Thermoking engine I have. Lots less money.

I heard identical Caterpillar engine like this one and the Kubota 3 cylinder running. The Caterpillar engine is a bit noisier-more Diesel sound then the Kubota.  Both are excellent engines.  Good Luck, TomC
