One turns into Three

It always seems to be the case.  Got back July 2th after a 2 week, 3 lake (Clear Lake, Lake Tahoe, Shaver Lake) 1600 mile drive, and had an oil leak (imagine that!).  Turns out to be the return line from the turbo leaking from rubbing on the exhaust manifold.  With the Vdrive engine, the turbo is up in the back making the only way to access it through the hatch under the bed.  And of course, when removing the hatch, discover that the turbo is tucked in above the hatch.  So to get to the line, I have to slide down into the hatch (laying over the water tank and water heaters on a plywood board) with my toes holding me from not sliding completely into the engine compartment, then twisting looking up to the turbocharger (not easy for a big fat boy).  Luckily, the part is from a Series 60 (used a 12.7 liter Series 60 turbo with waste gate on my 8V-71) and was easy to get.  After much mulling over in my mind during the week, successfully got the return line back on, but not without a major kink in my neck.

While behind the engine, also noticed the copper water line from transmission to the water pump had been rubbing on the starter solenoid and made a serious groove in the pipe.  Took that out and had Atlas Radiator (in Santa Fe Springs) braze on a rub plate.

Also, had been having a warm engine no starter at various times.  Discovered the big ground on the of the starter was loose.  Tightened that up, and no more problems.  Started with one- and turned into three problems.  Good Luck, TomC

You got that right Melbo!  My goal is to never break down on the road-if at all possible.  And even with everything being rebuilt in the engine compartment, things still happen.

All those problems had a happy ending and reasonable price hung on them.  You oughta be full of beans on this....except for the neck thingy.  Hope that gets better for you quickly.  Don't you love it when a plan comes together?  Every one of those would have stopped me dead on the road or in a parking lot somewhere...good work.  I think it would pay to foot the bill for one man hour for a thin and particularly agile mech to crawl all over the bay just looking for stuff like that.
