I have two spicer transmissions, a 4 speed and a 5 speed.  I was wondering if I could take the tower off the 4 speed (model 8844a) and put it on the 5 speed (not sure of the model, but the bolt line up is the same). The linkage on my 05 eagle is set up for the 4 speed. I am current putting another engine in my bus and that new engine  came with the 5 speed. Would like to know the if it is possible to make this tower switch and is it worth it. If it is workable, where would the 5th gear be in the shift arrangement and how would the reverse work? Thanks

I'd suggest looking at the manuals to see if it would work. If I had to guess, I'd say switching towers on the transmissions probably won't work without changing a host of other parts inside the tower.

How much trouble is it to take them both off & compare? You might get lucky.  ;)

Good luck & let us know how it turns out.

If the five speed is similar to the one that came on the MC-9, I had a look at that manual and would have to say that it's highly unlikely that the shifter from a 4 speed will work.  The two gearboxes are quite different internally, the four speed is what I call a two shaft box, the five speed is a three shaft box.  I won't  say impossible though, since while I have a four speed open to look at, I have only looked at the manual for a five speed.

Thanks, for the input. Since I can't find anyone who has try this before. And most opinion seems to imply it will not work. I am reinstalling the 4 speed and hanging on to the 5 speed for another day. Thanks

If you do anything, I'd suggest you find a 7spd overdrive box since it is all in one (meaning no air splitters).  It will have a much lower starting and also overdrive. Then you'll have a really usable transmission.  Don't fool with just changing to a 5 spd.  Good Luck, TomC
