Air filter for 6V92TA

After Luvrbus pointed out that my air filter looked too small on my 5C with 6V92, I realized that it is very likely the reason it smokes black when I put my foot down on the pedal. I am looking at a Donaldson Ecolite part no. P537449 ( throw away disposable type). IT will fit in my space with just moving a coolant line a couple of inches. It is rated at 1500cfm @ 5" H2O restriction.


I need to know if that will be good enough. I don't have a service manual for the 92 series yet.

Any info and opinions welcome.

JC, that is a overkill for a 6v92 just right for 8v92 all you need is 1200 cfm at 8" H20.Fwiw the Eco is a Parker system and is made by a lot of different manufactures shop around and you may can save bucks by using a Wix how do like the price of those LOL but they will last longer than other filters

OK, so I can pick the next smaller one (P537448) rated at 1200cfm @ 5" water collumn, 7" in and out. It is the same physical size as what I have now, so it will be easy to install.

How is the quality of filtration? Being that it is the same size as the old one. The web site doesn't explain how it's made. Better technology I would guess... Also it is rated for "light dust" application. Can I assume that a bus being operated mostly on pavement falls into that category?

Install a filter minder and replace that $100 filter when it is neccessary and not a minute before.  Regardless of what the manual says.  To soon and you waste money and to late and you are wasting fuel.  Isn't this device a "no brainer"?

Ebay has a lot of these from time to time.  You can even remote the filter gauge to the drivers area up front.  Cool!  Well maybe not exactly cool but you follow....

JC, I have been using the ECO system for years and never had a bad test come back on one and I did drive in some dust in NV,AZ,ID and Texas.
Check with David at SOD that filter is his choice when doing engine swaps and it was standard on model 15 Eagles with the 6v92 only filter made for me on a 2 stroke only drawback to most folks is the price.BTW is your intake area large enough

My intake is 7", and it draws from in front of the left hand side rad. Isn't that the stock configuration?

No it doesn't look stock. The bus has MC9 caps, so the air intake was modified. There is a square hole cut in the floor in front of the rad, and it leads to the 7" pipe that goes to the air filter. That cut hole is only about 4" by 6". So I will get at it with the angle grinder to make it bigger. Looks like I can get it to be at least 7" by 7", to match the pipe to the filter. If you see what I mean, the air enters through the side grill in front of the rad. Some air goes through the rad, and some goes down into the filter. I'll take a picture.

And after surgery. It is now about 4" by 11". Almost double what it was before. You can see the old hole below for the air intake duct that was plugged. The current air intake pipe is just ahead of it toward the front of the bus. It is about 4" below the hole I just inlarged.  That should improve air flow. We'll see this afternoon when I go to Calgary. I'll be able to tell by how much black smoke I put out. I have a ECO filter on order.

Now what do you guys think about a duct I could make out of sheet metal that would channel the air directly to that hole from the grill at the side of the bus? At present, air enters through the side grill, then some is sucked through the rad and some is sucked into the intake toward the filter. I don't know which is stronger: the rad fan, or the turbo. Would I gain anything by seperating them to the grill?
